Even before Bloc Party released their self-titled EP at the end of last year, the buzz had already begun. The London quartet, who look like they could be the spokespeople for Benetton’s new indie rock line, have only been playing together for about two years. However, it seems a mere 24 months or so was all the band needed to not only perfect an infectious mix of dance, indie rock and punk, but to also captivate the world’s music community. Silent Alarm is the band’s first full length release and if you liked their EP, watch out. By the fourth song, it becomes clear that Bloc Party are not just the “next” UK band to take a stab at success in the UK. These guys are the real deal and barring some sort of tragedy (like people again deciding nü metal is a good idea), they have a full career ahead of them. In case you’re not at all familiar with their sound, simply toss Gang Of Four, The Cure and Joy Division into a meat grinder and you’ll just barely start to realize the yummy musical sausage that is Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm. From the album opener, “Like Eating Glass”, to the final track, “Compliments”, Silent Alarm is a thing to be admired by all. Songs like “Helicopter”, “Banquet” and “She’s Hearing Voices” are powerful, dance-based, booty-shaking gems while “Blue Light” and “This Modern Love” are sweet and smooth like that new European-style hot chocolate drink at Starbucks. These days it’s hard to find an album without at least a few tracks that need skipping over, but it’s safe to say, should you choose to spend your hard earned dough on Silent Alarm, you’ll be getting your money’s worth. Be sure to save a place for this one on your Best of ‘05 list.
