Now and then an album comes along that captures your complete attention from start to finish. Engineer’s self-titled debut happens to be one of those records. Setting themselves on the opposite side of the musical spectrum from the UK rock of the Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight, this London quartet is stargazing music at its absolute finest. The group prides themselves on sounding completely different from anything current, which has allowed Engineers to give us something uniquely remarkable. This album is a gorgeous, cinematic musical experience filled with lush orchestration and swelling crescendos that look back to the days when Spiritualized was at the top of their game. The album explodes from the first seconds of the opening track “Home”, complete with rolling timpani drums, stunning strings and huge harmony-filled choruses. “Forgiveness” shows Engineers lightening their sound up just a tad, giving us a soothing pop gem that seems to float along clouds of strings and breathy vocals. “New Horizons” teeters between the synth goodness of Air and the laidback vocals of the Beta Band. Another highlight is the slow building “Come In Out Of The Rain”, which could very well be the finest track on the album. Fans of Sigur Ros, Brian Eno and Mercury Rev should get their hands on this record as soon as possible. This is the music that dreams are made of.
