Whether in a band or as a solo artist, Bob Mould has always broken down barriers and confounded expectations. Part of seminal post-punk acts Hüsker Dü and Sugar, and more recently recording electronic-based solo albums, the Minneapolis native has always had a way with a tune, and it’s no different on Body Of Song. Reintegrating guitars into his work for the first time in years, Mould still finds room for the synths, such as on the vocoded “(Shine Your) Light Love Hope” and “Circles”. But the guitars are indeed back, and showcased perfectly on rockers like “Paralyzed”, “Best Thing”, and “Underneath Days”, Mould’s easily recognizable vocal sound melding Sugar-like with the crunchy licks. He even calls in some favors from friends, including Fugazi’s Brendan Canty and ex-Sugar sidekick David Barbe. Ringing true to his solo career as a body of work, Body Of Song is part guitar record, part electronic record, but all Bob Mould. And from the man that brought such wondrous offerings as Copper Blue, Workbook, and Zen Arcade, nothing less would be expected.
