San Francisco is the root of many things. Ghirardelli chocolate, Mission-style burritos, Bullitt, and Foreign Born. It was on the streets of this windy city where ex-Papercuts singer and keyboard player Matt Popieluch and musical brother-in-arms Lewis Pesacov first banged out melodies together. They soon heard the siren song from Southern California, however, and scurried down the coast to Los Angeles to meet up with drummer Garret Ray and Ariel Rechtshald and the new act was underway. Their debut EP, In The Remote Woods, is an interesting little affair, indeed. Sounding in parts like fellow Southlanders Frausdots and in others like their (seeming) influences The Pixies and Joy Division, Foreign Born find one of their finest moments on the A-side of their EP, “The Entryway”. A haunting bassline collides with sinister synths, chiming guitar and Popieluch’s echoing baritone. It’s a recipe that works well for the quartet and one that will take some watching in the coming months. At least there is In The Remote Woods to keep us company until a proper full length can be delivered. Go for a hike, you’ll like what you find.
