Sufjan Stevens
Illinois

Asthmatic Kitty

This album is one of the most refreshing pieces of music to have been released in years. Sufjan Stevens attempts to do something unique and remarkably, he succeeds while still producing music that is addictively catchy. An incredible ensemble of instruments that rage from church organ to saxophone are all wielded by Stevens to create a rich, complex sound. The album, Illinois, is an ode to the state of Illinois and features 22 tracks that all focus on the history of the state. Normally this might sound really strange, but Stevens pulls it together in such a way that it doesn’t alienate listeners outside the Illinois state line. The lyrics are very well written and most of the songs have a universal appeal. The added highlight is the detailed cover art which features a painting of the Chicago skyline with Superman and Al Capone. The album has a very melancholy feel with a saddening element constantly being counteracted by a hopeful presence. Released early this month (July), the album is already a big hit with the indie rock community and has been lauded with praise by print media and the blogosphere alike. If you want to maintain your exceptional indie rock cred, you better go get this record. Really… that cute girl with the Karen O hair cut, black framed glasses and a “guide to vegan living” book in her purse probably won’t even talk to you if you don’t have this album.
