When one thinks of West Virginia, coalmines, toothless inbreeds and dirt rock come to mind. Well, one of three out isn’t band. American Minor do, indeed, hail from West Virginia – Charleston, to be exact, and they are dirt rock, in the Southern-fried, hook-laden classic rock fashion. Fusing influences like Neil Young, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Pavement, the quintet cooks up their own sonic stew, firing off riff after riff, layering on harmony after harmony, until they have assembled something that sounds far more than just the sum of its parts. Produced by founding members of Blind Melon, the band’s self-titled debut LP for Jive has that Blind Melon classic guitar rock feel. American Minor feels like the soundtrack to Saturday night at the pool hall with your best friends and a number of pitchers of beer. The riffs of “Walk On” and “Buffalo Creek”, the boogie of “Don’t Jump The Gun”, the low-slung groove of “Cheaters and Non-Believers”, and the countrified-funk of the Black Crowes-tastic ”Mr. Queen”, all show a band growing by leaps and bounds, maturing at a rate that belies their tender age. Emanating a carefree down-home vibe, American Minor cull the ghosts of classic rock past to construct their own take on the well-worn sound. The jeans are tight, the bottoms are bells, the beards are long and the hair is too, but the hooks come fast and heavy and Rob McCutcheon sings like he’s passing down rock royalty. Let your hair down and pull up a chair, American Minor have a rock story they’d like to share with you.
