Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be…

2x+(3y-18)-71π/7y-x*3√91816 = Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies. I think. I missed that day in math rock class. Nevertheless, what Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies DOES equal is a damn fine listening experience, album title-length notwithstanding. Actually, a title like Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than The Last; The Inexorable March Of Progress Will Lead Us All To Happiness is surprisingly insightful as to the sound found within. Spiritual brethren of Mogwai, yourcodenameis:milo, and in their less bombastic moments, Biffy Clyro, YMSS are comprised of walls of guitar, swirling drums of beehive proportions, and time changes that would make Metallica proud. And with six songs clocking in at 39:41, it seems that YMSS will only keep songs under six minutes under threat of physical violence. Which is fine, as there is no hurry to have any of these extended works of art end anytime soon. Favorites included the opener “The Pitch And Yaw Of Satellites” and “…Spooks the Horse”, both filled with awe-inspiring and mind-melting musical wonderment. And with the number of lengthy-careered artists hailing from Oxford (Radiohead, Swervedriver, and Ride, to name a few), who’s to say Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies aren’t ascending along the same career path?
