Are they high-end jewelers? World-class athletes for which anything less than first place just won’t do? Do they hate the Oakland Raiders? (Do they even know who the Oakland Raiders ARE?) No clue why London’s Veto Silver eschews the good old Ag but regardless of their feelings on that subject, one thing they don’t eschew is a hook, which is good news for all. This trio from the capital of England fashion themselves as “electro-fuelled art pop”, which of course is a quite fair description; they did write it themselves, after all. And with their perfectly tousled ‘dos, pretty boy good looks, and warm synths, Veto Silver’s debt to Duran Duran is quite evident. But “When You’re With That Girl” is even more evocative of a male-fronted Dubstar. The essence of synthpop of the last twenty years is all around, with nods to Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Soft Cell, and even a less camp Fischerspooner all present. What’s old is new again and it’s no news to anyone that the ‘80s synth revival has been going for awhile now. Veto Silver just prove it can still be done well. Congrats, lads.
