Black Wire claim that they are three rail thin lads from Leeds that write distorted pop songs. While that may be true, the music that they make is filled up to the brim with a power punch that leaves the listener wanting more. The band’s self-titled CD, put out by Chicago’s newly formed independent label Giant Pecker Records, is a weird combination of The Faint’s Dance Marcabre and The Clash doing the tango with Iggy & The Stooges. Their resume reads like a book and is pretty impressive as well, playing with everyone from The Cribs and Ladytron to The Rapture. Even better is that Kaiser Chiefs wrote the song “I Predict A Riot” about one of Black Wire’s shows at the legendary rock night called Pigs. The LP kicks off with “God Of Traffic” that sounds very similar to Bloc Party’s more punked out songs like “Price Of Gas”. The first single, “Hard To Love (Easy To Lay)” fits into this category as well. Another track, “Attack Attack Attack” builds into a fist-pumping hipster anthem with pounding drums and angular guitars. During this song the repetitive usage of the lyrics find a way of seeping into the audience’s head in a brainwashing manner; making the jean-clad and overpriced-fancy-haircut-loving crowd begin saying the words as if they are their own. “Promote The Happy Hours” is a total flashback to The Clash, and that is a good thing. Overall this debut CD for the group is pretty good and recommended to anyone that loves a good party, or at least wants to start one. Watch out for these guys when they come to America pretty soon. Oh yeah, and the guys have an amazing T-shirt out there, hit us up if you are hard to love but easy to lay. We might send one to you if you are lucky.
