There’s something innately human about the music of Matt Pond PA. Like the collective unconscious that, if you believe Carl Jung, binds all human beings together, Matt Pond (the band’s leader and namesake) has the uncanny ability to convert universal emotions like love, loss, compassion, anger, and longing into something more than just words on a page or sound waves emanating from a pair of speakers. Written with the heart of a poet, Pond’s songs speak to the soul on a subconscious level. You can’t put your finger on it. You don’t know exactly why or how, but each song was written for you, and you alone, about a specific moment in your lifetime. Those summer days you used to spend at the pool, the one who got away, the girl who broke your heart, that one night stand you had in Istanbul with the turkish hooker (well, maybe not that last one) – each of these events and many more are all captured with resounding clarity by Pond’s lyrical genius. Ambiguous yet precise, Pond sees the world around him through the eyes of a casual observer, turning events of everyday life into intoxicating stories peppered with profound, declaratory passages. Several Arrows Later is Matt Pond PA’s fifth full length album in five years and quite possibly their best chance at mainstream success to date. They may not be the “coolest” band out there, the most exciting or the most good looking and well dressed, but Matt Pond PA have something that trumps all of that superficial crap – heart. And while heart alone isn’t enough to have a hit single, couple that with extraordinary talent and that, my friends, is the stuff careers are made of.
