As a multiple band man, Scott McCaughey knows how to make a name for himself, with credits stemming Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M., and Tutara. But it’s his work on The Minus Five’s new, self-titled release that is gaining the latest buzz. The record, also known as “The Gun Album” because of the handgun on the cover, features collaborations with the likes of Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt from Wilco, The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy and John Moen, and Peter Buck from R.E.M. “Rifle Called Goodbye” presents an offering refreshingly on the rocks and classic enough to serenade the stiff-hearted. “Cemetery Row” slips an inescapable, reminiscent croon, while “Twilight Distillery” boasts apathetic freefall (“there’s nothing in my mind/and I don’t mind”). The Minus Five began in1993 as a relevant project to McCaughey’s idea boom from Young Fresh Fellows, and blossomed into its current notable status. The new album follows Down With Wilco and the At The Organ EP, the first works to debut on Yep Roc Records. The Minus Five’s latest, resounding with a streak of torment and a displaced patriarch, is as cherishable as it is (at times) brash.
