The DFA Remixes: Chapter One

DFA/Astralwerks

For any disco funk-o-phile who has ever delved into remixes, The DFA masterminds James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and Tim Goldsworthy will release a two-part anthology of some of their best remixes this year. Featuring the likes of Le Tigre, Chemical Brothers, Radio 4, Fischerspooner, Gorillaz and Hot Chip, among others, the first volume will land April 4th, with the second scheduled for late this summer (includes Goldfrapp and Nine Inch Nails). Many remixes may be cornballish and annoyingly epic to an anticlimactic dissolve, but DFA reaches a further pinnacle with its breathier and selectively filtrated blend of spin and drive rhythmics. Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon” shreaks disco, while Blues Explosion’s “Mars Arizona” immediately hooks with its “mouth full of love” beat lyrics. Soulwax demonstrates a standard with “Another Excuse”, featuring electro shingles and progressive follow-up through to Fischerspooner’s “Emerge” – an alluring cut permeating Prince-esque phunkadelia. Hot Chip’s “(Just Like We) Breakdown” summons blue mood lighting with bleeding synth-charged smacks highlighting melodramatic vocals. If a remix reflected the quality of its original, The DFA Remixes Chapter One would be a prime indication – considering such things don’t come around too often.
