I have never set foot in Columbia, Missouri and when I think about music, it’s also not the first place that comes to mind. However that may change soon with a little band called The Foundry Field Recordings. They wear their influences, such as Built To Spill and Grandaddy, on their rolled-up indie rock sleeves and they create music that is perfect for bathing in the summer sun.
The new LP, Prompts/Miscues, covers a variety of genres; from the shoegazer feedback-infused pop on “Battle Brigades Part I” and “Battle Brigades Part II”, to your basic Beach Boys’ inspired indie rock tunes like “Circuits On Board.” “Spain Never Made It,” whose use of horns is a nice touch, also showcases that this band is more than just another indie-rock one trick pony. One of the best tracks on the album is “Assembled Hazardly,” a song that makes use of male/female vocals in harmony and violin strings. “Clones Were Made For Them But Not Us” starts off like a b-side from Travis, jangly guitars and all, before slowly becoming another standout track on the record.
There is something strangely familiar about this album. It brings a bit of nostalgia and sounds like something I would have played when I was a DJ back in my college radio days. If you are looking for something new to listen to that may not currently be on the top of every “it” list right now, then check out The Foundry Field Recordings. It just might be this summer’s sleeper you won’t want to miss out on.
