The Frames are one of the biggest bands in Ireland. Despite record label conflicts and multiple line-up changes, the band has managed to release a steady steam of quality recordings dating all the way back to 1992’s Another Love Song. The Cost, The Frames’ latest effort, finds the band in an unfamiliar spot. The release is their third album in a row for the same record label (the first time in the band’s long career that has happened) and it seems that the comfort of finding a caring home for their music is working out quite nicely for The Frames. The Cost finds The Frames at the top of their game and is filled with expertly crafted, emotional and thoughtful epic pop songs that will simultaneously bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your face.

Songs like “Falling Slowly” and “Song For Someone” seem destined for airtime on the next season of Grey’s Anatomy, and I mean that in the best way possible. Like a mix between Damien Rice and Travis, The Frames make music that can walk the line between mainstream and underground with ease. Soaring vocals, universal lyrical themes, infectious melodies, outstanding instrumentation and a thick, textured, string-filled wall of sound make this album worth listening to from start to finish… though it’s best served up on a cold, dark winter day at home or curled up by the fire with a glass of wine.
