With a name that should belong to the next Interpol wannabe gothic tribe, Eulogies step out of the LA sun and into the spotlight with their self-titled, upbeat rock album that sounds nowhere near as sad as their name suggests. This trio got together while opening for Starsailor a few months back and have driven down the path of cohesiveness. While stylistically similar to Starsailor, the Eulogies put a unique and personal spin on your usual sound of a rock band. Simple drums, bass and guitar (with occasional keys) are all used just the way they’re supposed to be. At times it’s heart wrenching, while at others it could be the soundtrack to next summer’s indie blockbuster. It’s like having a springtime picnic in a cemetery. The loneliness surrounds you, but it’s a comforting loneliness you can look away from. When the tunes do take a turn to the somber (”If I Knew You,” “Little Davie”) it only gives more weight to their name. Highlights of the upbeat sort, like “Running In The Rain,” while it does deal with death, showcases the talents of Chris Reynolds behind the drums. The driving beat along with the dark bass lines of Tim Hutton give the song a perfect foundation for this Spoon-like number. Bandleader Peter Walker doesn’t have the strongest voice in the singing world, but he certainly knows how to get his point across. The world is not the most pleasant place, but that doesn’t mean you have to maintain a focus on the negative. Take the time to listen to Eulogies and realize the world around you is just as beautiful as it needs to be.
