Does It Offend You, Yeah?, an electro-rock band from Reading, choose the right title for their new album on Columbia Records. It’s called You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into. I’ve been blaring a few of their songs since last year, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I played their album for the first time. It’s far better and more experimental than I could have imagined based on the few songs I had heard by them before.

The album begins with “Battle Royale,” a song that has been circulating for a while. It has all the makings of a great electronica tune; beats, loops, “the mother ship has landed” effects, and splashes of strange vocal samples. The surprise came when I heard the next song; “With A Heavy Heart (I Regret To Inform You).” It’s rowdy sex music, my friends. The song begins quietly and builds as the instruments go off and backing vocals come in that sound like a death metal demon just got a weekend pass out of hell. As if this wasn’t enough, the song is electric enough to dance to it, and hot enough to have knock over the lamp sex to it. Good stuff.

“We Are Rockstars” shows why the band is compared to Daft Punk. “Dawn Of The Dead” surprised me with its pretty pop. It also reminded me that Does It Offend You, Yeah? is a full band with bass, drums, synth, and guitar. “Doomed Now” keeps the pretty going, “Attack of the 60 Ft Lesbian Octopus” takes the album in a weird electronic direction, and “Let’s Make Out” goes off with its raunchy and sexy dance. “Being Bad Feels Pretty Good” is another song that surprised me. It’s stellar electro rock pop. I didn’t hear a weak song on this entire album, and I’m so pleased by what Does It Offend You, Yeah? has managed to accomplish.

Another thing that pleases me is the band’s name, which is a reference to The Office. The boys turned on the telly and decided to take whatever they heard and use it as a band name. It just so happened to be Ricky Gervais saying, “Does it offend you, yeah?”
