Simpsons Creator Curating ATP, Lisa Simpson Avant Sax Troupe?

Simpson’s creator Matt Groening is set to curate the first weekend of All Tomorrow’s Parties, May 7-9 2010 at the venerable Butlins resort in Minehill, England. Unlike Pavement, who curate the next weekend, this isn’t Groening’s first rodeo, as he curated the second Stateside ATP in 2003, selecting acts like Cat Power, !!! and Sonic Youth to round out his lineup. ATP, so incestuous. No stranger to musical guests or whats expected at ATP, let’s just hope that Groening pulls out all the stops for the UK installment, including, and believe me our fingers are crossed, Lisa Simpson and Bleeding Gums Murphy performing Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew as part of ATP’s longstanding Don’t Look Back series.

Pavement to Curate ATP in May

It’s been heavily rumored for months, even before the announcement of the reunion, and it is in fact happening: Pavement will curate All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehill, England in May 14-16 2010. Playing ATP means that the band’s first scheduled shows at Central Park will– surprise, surprise– not be their first shows! Who could’ve seen this coming?! Now the question should be, what’s the likelihood will be that Pavement will play Coachella? Or rather, when will Coachella announce that Pavement is headlining? Maybe they’ll “ruin” Lollapalooza again! All in all, looks like the Spiral Stairs may be too busy booking plane tickets on Orbitz to tour Sri-Lanka in support of his forthcoming The Real Feel. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

ATP Preview: What if Jim Jarmusch and Sufjan Stevens shared a tent?

If you’re reading this post you probably like music, art, film and comedy, or at the very least some combination of the four. If so, ATP New York probably has something for you and, it’s only a few weekends away. Just for starters: Jim Jarmusch presenting his film Mystery Train, a David Cross curated comedy section, an Eric White art exhibit, Sufjan, and No Age and Bob Mould performing Husker Du… the list goes on and on.

ATP takes place the weekend of September 11 at Kutsher’s Country Resort in Catskills, New York. Three-day or one-day passes are available as are buses from Brooklyn and Manhattan to the stomping grounds.And there’s no corporate sponsorships in these parts, so while this does seemingly lessen your chance of getting a free energy drink upon arrival, it way ups your chance of not selling out and whatnot. Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore described All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals recently as “the ultimate mixtape.” He’s better with words than we are. No, not really. Warp Films has announced today that on September 23rd, they’ll be releasing All Tomorrow’s Parties, a “DIY concert film” that features live ATP footage culled from the festival’s young history, one that includes performances by Daniel Johnston, Battles, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Portishead, Belle And Sebastian, Animal Collective, Iggy and the Stooges, Mogwai, Grinderman, Slint, Grizzly Bear, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip and The Boredoms. Directed by includes contributions from Jonathan Caouette, the film also features contributions from cinematographer Vincent Moon of Take Away Shows webfame.

My Bloody Valentine To Curate ATP Nightmare Before Christmas, Bunch More Old People Confirmed

ATP have confirmed shoegaze forebearers (and seemingly ATP poster children as of late) My Bloody Valentine will be the curators of this year’s Nightmare Before Christmas.

The party will take place on December 4-6 at Butlin’s in Minehead, England. Kevin Sheilds has already booked Sonic Youth, De la Soul, Sun Ra Arkestra, EPMD and The Horrors for the bill (seems funny typing all those epic bands and then… The Horrors?). Mike Patton and Melvins were the forces behind last years Nightmare Before Christmas bash last year, so it’s no surprise the festival has booked Dublin’s staple shoegazers, My Bloody Valentine for the gig, in hopes of creating another stellar year of visual and musical mayhem.

ATP are also giving event goers a special deal on tickets for this years Nightmare Before Christmas party — man, we love recession-specials. Attendees have the opportunity to purchase an early bird special for the event. Everyone who purchases a ticket for seven days until 9 a.m. on April 24 (or until the ticket allotment runs out) will get 20 euros off of their ticket.

Flashback Friday Video – Devo “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”

Since last month had a Friday the 13th too, we decided to forego the creepy video this time around and pay homage to Devo’s decision to play their 1978 debut Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in it’s entirety.

Not only did they announce they would play Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in it’s entirety at the London Kentish Town Forum on Mar 6, but they announced they will be putting out a new record for the first time in two decades as well (plus ATP and SxSW), so how could we not pay homage?

Known for its hits like “Mongoloid” and “Gut Feeling”, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, has become a staple album for the late 1970s and 80s new wave scene. The album was produced by Brian Eno at the behest of David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Ironically, the recording sessions were a source of frustration for Eno and Devo. Eno found the group unwilling to experiment or deviate from their early demos of recorded songs. Devo later admitted that “we were overtly resistant to Eno’s ideas. He made up synth parts and really cool sounds for almost every part of the album, but we used them on three or four songs.”[from Wiki]. Also ironic is that the only song to get an official video was their cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. But as we all know, they went on to “Whip It” later, making music video history.
