Bishop Allen Prove You Don’t Need a Video Budget When You’ve Got Flappers and Fringe

If muted, at first glance this video could almost be mistaken for a flapper chick’s take on the “Single Ladies” viral video craze sans Terminator glove. That is, until the immediate close-up of the indie-rock beard that belongs to a man playing the heck out of his little baritone. But as it plays out, it’s more just Bishop Allen being generally adorable while leading something that vaguely resembles the watusi. The whole scene sets a nice stage for the calmly enchanting call and answer of “True Or False.” It also gives a nice showcase to Darbie, who has become an intricate part of the band’s live shows but can sometimes be thrust to the background when people look at this band. Bishop Allen Screen New Film at MoMA, Announce Tour

Bishop Allen have proved a few times over that they can float quite successfully between the mediums of music and film. This began with their friendship with mumblecore master Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha, Mutual Appreciation). The results have presumably been aided by the band members remaining within a certain comfort zone (i.e. playing young aspiring musicians relocating to New York City- weird huh?), and they continue in this vein with Bob Byington’s Harmony and Me. Singer Justin Rice will play a recently dumped downer whose complaints have become too much even for his close friends, causing him to turn to songwriting. The film debuted at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art Friday and will be showing until this Thursday September 24.

The band also announced their fall tour, which is structured as a sort of loose autobiographical journey, beginning in Cambridge and ending in Brooklyn.

Bishop Allen Returns to the Big Screen

bishopallen_main

Bishop Allen, (sort of) fresh from their cameo in ultra-twee film Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist are back in the film game. The band’s Justin Rice will be starring in Harmony and Me, playing “a depressed lyricist clinging to the memory of an ex-girlfriend.” Oookay…not the most original idea, but we’ll hold judgment until we can actually check the entire movie out. Oh yeah, the band has a new video for “Shanghaied” starring a bunny and is also touring Europe in July, if you live there or are around there check them out.

Sasquatch Announces Line-Up; We’re Pretty Impressed But Our Wallets Are Not

In the wake of the ever increasing pool of festivals and the possible merger between Live Nation and Ticketmaster, the idea of paying $200 to see live music during a recession resulted in our pockets slapping us back into reality. But to be fair, the Sasquatch Festival — presented by Live Nation and tickets sold by Ticketmaster — is one of the cheaper weekend-long festivals and the line-up could quite possibly be the best yet.
