There is really just one thing necessary to cover Chuck Berry: the ability to absolutely obliterate a roots rock guitar solo. M. Ward took on “Roll Over Beethoven” during an encore set at Coachella and left no riff unturned. If anybody is rolling over in their grave, it’s definitely not Mr. Berry.

Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band Release Free Documentary Online

Conor Oberst has been quite busy over the past year and a half. The songwriter has dropped his Bright Eyes alias, picked up the Mystic Valley Band, and is releasing yet another album on May 5, but even better, Oberst is giving us an inside scoop into the past 18 months of his life on the road and recording with his new project, with his new documentary that will be released online on April 15.

One Of My Kind was shot by Phil Schaffart, the band’s guitar-tech, and follows the band touring and recording over the past year and a half. The hour-long DVD is free, and can be downloaded from numerous websites, including IFC.com, Conoroberst.com, and Causecast.org. Instead of charging fans for the documentary, Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band are encouraging fans to donate to charities and non-profit organizations affiliated with Causecast.

Outer South, Oberst’s latest record, will be available off of Merge Records on May 5, and the band will be touring across the country throughout April, June and July, making stops at the XXMerge festival, and Coachella.

Fucked Up Moves Release Year Of The Rat 12″ Next Week

The release of Fucked Up’s new 12″, Year Of The Rat — part of the band’s series of records based on the Chinese astrological cycle — has been moved up to next Tuesday, April 7.

The 11-minute A-side was recorded by the band at the end of 2008, and is the third installment of their Chinese astrological series. Year of the Rat stays true to the principles of the Chinese sign, and pays homage to the changes of the year politically and culturally, despite being a hardcore single of heavily layered guitars and dense vocals. Or maybe the year of the rat is signified by a bloody-face in China? Either way, the band will start touring next week as well to support the single — whose B-side is the track “First Born” — ending on the April 19 at Coachella.

The Stone Roses Reunite And Disband In One Day

Man, you travel to TX for one day, and in that time The Stone Roses both reunited and disbanded again. Well, that’s if you follow the rumors printed in the British tabloids.

Yesterday, The Daily Mirror exclusively reported that the band was preparing a 21 gig UK tour this summer to accompany the boxed set reissue of their debut LP. An appearance at Coachella was also mentioned.

Citing a “source,” the Mirror actually went on to say that both John Squire and Ian Brown (who was apparently persuaded by Squire) on board: “It’s taken a lot of time to get Ian to agree but he’s finally signed on the dotted line. The rest of the band were really up for it, especially when they realised the amount of money on the table.” Squire quit in 1996 due to, well, let’s call them creative differences, with Ian. The pair are rumoured never to have spoken since.

But that was yesterday, and today is today. And with this rumor comes the quick squash by both Brown and Squire, as NME reports the guitarist notes the reunion tour info is completely “unfounded” and that John “is not initiating a reunion or tour.” As if that doesn’t seal the deal, Brown’s publicist told the Daily Mail that the singer concurs with Squire, and that he “knows nothing about a reunion. Ian is working on his new studio album which is due out later this year.”

My Bloody Valentine Extend Their U.S. Stay After Coachella For West Coast Dates

Thank the shoegaze gods, even those of us not lucky enough to be in California around Coachella-time this year will still have a chance to see My Bloody Valentine — they’ll be playing a handful of shows out west after they finish up at the festival.

It’s a limited run, but they are making some appearances in cities that they didn’t the last time they hit U.S. soil.

Silversun Pickups To Make ‘09 Live Debut At SxSW, Kind Of…

Like many of you out there, we’re totally excited to see Silversun Pickups back in the news for their highly anticipated April 14 release of Swoon on Dangerbird Records. It’s already getting a lot of love for the debut single “Panic Switch”, which is currently the number one most added single at modern rock radio this week (note: not college). But why are they overlooking their real first show of 2009?

We’re not serious about this in case you were wondering, we’re just curious as to why we received a press release stating the Pickups will make their ‘09 live debut at SxSW accompanied with tour dates that lists their first show in Kansas City the Tuesday before SxSW? Our Notes From Middle America columnist Danny Phillips is waving his Missouri flag as we speak.

Either way, we’re excited to see the return of the Silversun Pickups to stages wherever they may be. Aside from Kansas City and SxSW, the quartet will play a pre-Coachella warm-up show before helping to usher in the 10th annual Music and Arts Festival. They’ll also be performing at The Sasquatch Festival on May 25.

Devendra Banhart, Murder City Devils, Chemical Brothers And More Added To Coachella Line-up

Well, to be fair, the “more” refers to The Orb and Etienne de Crecy, who along with Devendra Banhart, Chemical Brothers and the Murder City Devils have been added to the official line-up at the Coachella festival.

According to the L.A. Weekly [via The Daily Swarm], Coachella has a new web ‘zine called Coachella Digital, which yesterday confirmed what we told you about Amy Winehouse, and also announced the addition of five new acts to the roster. As the Weekly points out, none of them are U2, Pavement or The Smiths, but it’s still a nice little surprise.

The addition of Devendra Banhart, The Orb, Chemical Bros., Murder City Devils and Etienne de Crecy brings the total of acts scheduled to appear up to 125 — still two shy of last year’s bill.

Amy Winehouse Pulls Out Of Coachella Line-up

By now, the rehab jokes have gotten old, but Amy Winehouse just can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble. So with a highly anticipated Coachella performance just over a month away, it somehow doesn’t strike us as surprising that the soul singer has been forced to pull out of the California music festival.

According to her spokesman, Winehouse has been unable to get a work visa to travel to the United States in time to perform at this year’s Coachella. She was set to perform on April 18 with the likes of Paul McCartney and The Killers, but just as she couldn’t obtain a work visa to perform at the 2008 Grammy Awards — she was in rehab for drug use — she is now facing charges of assault, which are preventing the singer from making this appearance.

The frail-boned, bee-hive donning singer was charged with common assault after an incident at a ball in London’s Berkeley Square last year, according to Reuters. The singer has a hearing for the assault case later this month, on March 17 at Westminister Magistrates’ Court. Unfortunately for the Grammy award winning Winehouse, her talent has been largely overlooked within the past few years because of her crazy-girl antics stealing the heat from her success. Coachella organizers have not yet said who will replace the singer at this year’s festival, but we sure are going to miss out on her performance.

SIA To Release Behind The Scenes Tour DVD

Capturing some of her best moments on tour and the rise to success with her critically acclaimed 2008 album, Some People Have REAL Problems, Australian pop songstress Sia Furler is releasing some behind the scenes footage for fans to see, on her new DVD, TV Is My Parent, this May.

Fans will be able to get the inside scoop on the self-proclaimed ‘unicorn fart’ — no really, she says so on her MySpace — on the new DVD, which will be released May 19. Featuring live concert footage from her show at the Hiro Ballroom in New York City on September 12, 2007, as well as four music videos and behind the scenes video footage of her on her 2008 tour, Sia will be giving fans an insiders look into her rising music career over the past two years. The DVD is directed by Nic Wrathall, and features the videos for her singles “Buttons”, “Day Too Soon”, “The Girl You Lost To Cocaine”, and “Soon We’ll Be Found”. There will even be footage of her performance at last year’s Coachella Music Festival featured on the DVD.

In the past year alone, Sia has seen her album Some People Have REAL Problems be named “#1 Pop Album of 2008″ and “#4 Album of 2008″ on iTunes.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Push Up Release Of It’s Blitz! In Response To Leaks

Since their new album was leaked onto the internet before its official release date, Yeah Yeah Yeahs have decided to push up the release date of their new album, It’s Blitz!

The new, highly anticipated album from the band was originally set to be released in April, but because of the internet leakage It’s Blitz! will be digitally released, almost a month earlier than previously thought, on March 10, and will be available for sale in brick and mortar stores on March 31.

“The cat’s out of the bag after, It’s Blitz! escaped from our clutches into the big bad world last week. Why should some have and some have-not?,” the band was quoted as stating on their website. “YYYs have been brimming with nervous excitement in anticipation of releasing this record to the world. Leaks are NO FUN but it’s out of our hands,” they continued.

Alongside the release of their new album Yeah Yeah Yeahs will also be touring throughout Europe and the UK, but will making a stop in Indio, California to perform at Coachella on April 19.

Bruce Springsteen Confirmed Headliner For Glastonbury Festival

It looks like Bruce Springsteen is making his way through the festival circuit this spring and summer. It was rumored just last week that Mr. America himself might possibly be headlining Bonnaroo Festival, but now Bruce will be making his way over to the U.K. for the Glastonbury Festival, where he will be the Saturday night headliner as well.

While we’re a little curious as to how “Born In the U.S.A.” will pan out over on the other side of the pond, the sold out music festival — which will take place on June 26-28 — and the its organizers are very excited to have Springsteen grace their stage. “I’m so pleased that Bruce Springsteen has agreed to come to Worthy Farm for the first time,” said festival chief Michael Eavis. “He’s one of the all-time rock legends and I’m confident that this will be one of our best shows ever.”

Just last week, Emily Eavis, who helps run the festival, dismissed rumors that The Rolling Stones and U2 would be headlining the festival, but said “I’m knocked out that we’ve managed to get Bruce to play. It’s the icing on the cake of this year’s bill, which I’m sure will take everyone’s breath away when we announce the full details.”

So far, only a hand full of acts along with Bruce have been confirmed for the festival, including Bon Iver, Lilly Allen, and Franz Ferdinand. Among other artists rumored to play are Neil Young,Blur, Coldplay, and Oasis.

Mogwai, Leonard Cohen, Depeche Mode, And Late Of The Pier To Tour The U.S.

Are you ready for some excitement? This spring/summer is bound to be a musically fulfilling time, as Mogwai, Leonard Cohen, Depeche Mode and Late of the Pier have all announced tour dates for the upcoming months.

Mogwai are the first to set sail, starting off their tour in Athens, Greece tomorrow night. The band will be touring throughout Europe, the U.S., and Australia, ending their three month tour at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. Recently the Scottish band asked fans to sign a petition to protest laws that limited the volume at UK concerts, according to Pitchfork, so if you’re out at a Mogwai concert in the U.S. or Austrailia, be ready to have your eardrums rattled.

Leonard Cohen will be touring throughout April and May, making his first stop in Austin, Texas, after which the tour will continue throughout the U.S., ending on June 2 in Morrison Colorado. Cohen just recently played his first U.S. show in 15 years at NYC’s Beacon Theatre. The 74-year-old performer said, “It’s been a long time since I stood up on this stage in New York City. I was 60 years-old, just a kid with a crazy dream. Since then I’ve taken a lot of Prozac.”

In support of their soon-to-be released album, Sounds of the Universe, Depeche Mode will also be touring starting in July. The electro legend’s “Tour Of The Universe” will start off in Toronto on July 24, and will continue on for 21 more dates throughout North America.

Late of the Pier, the eclectic quartet from Nottingham, England, is playing a month of tour dates in the U.S. starting on March SXSW. The band will then be making their way throughout the greater U.S. regions, ending their tour on April 19, in Indio, California, where they will be performing at the Coachella Music Festival.

Coachella Fans Displeased With Killers Headlining

With Coachella just a month and a half away fans have been swarming the event’s message boards, posting their discontent about The Killers headlining Saturday night. Generally speaking, Coachella enlists acts of epic proportions to headline the event, so rumors have been circulating that the less-than-epic Las Vegas rockers are just holding Saturday night’s spot until a bigger name is released to surprise fans.

Who could it possibly be? According to The Daily Swarm, rumors have been flying rampant about a possible David Bowie performance, or even Bruce Springsteen and Metallica. We’re thinking the possibilities of Mr. Springsteen playing are slim, as he’s headlining Bonnaroo this year. We sure wouldn’t mind hearing Metallica headline, and a Bowie performance would be beyond epic.

Even if Coachella doesn’t announce a new headliner for Saturday night, if some fans get their way, you can look forward to some hilarious entertainment on the Conservative Talk Radio Stage. Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly are among the few conservative radio personalities sought out by fans on the message board.

Throbbing Gristle To Play First Ever NYC Show, Chicago And San Francisco

After announcing last week that they would be playing this year’s Coachella music festival in April, industrial rockers, Throbbing Gristle have gone and surprised fans once more, booking their first ever New York City appearance.

The U.K. band will be performing at Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple on April 16th before heading out to Cali. After their Coachella performance on April 19th, the band has announced they will play two more dates in the U.S., in Chicago and San Fransisco. Throbbing Gristle has not toured the U.S. since 1981, where they briefly played West coast shows only.

The British band is known as being forefathers of the industrial music scene back in the mid-1970s. Throbbing Gristle broke up, only to reunite in 2004 to record the album TG Now, and have recently released the 30th anniversary edition of The Second Annual Report on 12″ vinyl that includes a live demonstration at La Villette in Paris from June, 2008, and comes with a special extended CD version. The release will be their first since TG Now. The original edition of The Second Annual Report was first released in 1977.

Coachella 2009 Line-Up Finally Announced

We were right about Morrissey, wrong about Blur and sort of right about Faith No More, but now all the rumors can be laid to rest: Coachella has finally announced their line-up.

The Cure is the big name (again) on the closing day of the festival, which will also see My Bloody Valentine, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and X perform. Other big acts previously unknown include Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen and one sobered up Amy Winehouse. The rest is pretty good, but nothing too earth shattering. Should be fun regardless, check out the rest of the line-up in the poster below.

White Lies To Tour U.S. With Friendly Fires And The Soft Pack Before Playing Coachella

One top-selling UK band plus one of our favorite bands, along with a band who used to have a good name equals a pretty huge tour. That will be the case when The Soft Pack joins British imports White Lies and the Friendly Fires for a full North American stint.

The tour, which is being presented by NME, will have the White Lies and Friendly Fires co-headlining the spring tour. The tour kicks off on March 24 in Washington DC — most likely after SxSW stints for all three — hitting most major American and Canadian cities. White Lies will then kick back in Cali at the end of the tour waiting to play their confirmed gigs at Coachella.

With no rhyme or reason, our editorial staff chooses the top 10 biggest music-related news stories of 2008. Coming in at #6: the My Bloody Valentine reunion.

Chances are if you’re a moody 30-something who wore slanted bangs before “emo” made it cool and thinks shoegaze was born and died with the release of Loveless, then undoubtedly My Bloody Valentine’s reunion at this year’s All Tomorrow’s Parties New York installment was your biggest news story of the year.

First reported on The Daily Swarm, with rumors swirling of the reunion, speculation was they would land at Coachella instead.

Is the long wait finally over? My Bloody Valentine, the legendary sonic sculptors of feedback and tremelo who helped define the shoegaze movement only to disband after releasing just two full length albums, is set to make its first live appearance in more than a decade at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA in April, 2008. According to sources in the United States and the United Kingdom who are familiar with the negotiations, the band is close to signing a deal that will see a reunited My Bloody Valentine headline Coachella, scheduled for April 25–27, before embarking on a world tour sometime later in 2008.

Of course that rumor was kind of correct. The band was reuniting and coming to the States, but as updated by NME, Coachella founder and organizer Paul Tollett explained why the legendary shoegazers will not be performing at the Coachella Festival this year.

“I was hanging out with (My Bloody Valentine frontman) Kevin (Shields) over at the Led Zeppelin (reunion concert in December), and he said it was just too early,” Tollett said. “Coachella’s in April and I don’t think they’ll be ready yet.”

Instead, as The Daily Swarm broke, they would be playing and curating the New York installment of ATP. And all it cost lucky waiting fans was $225. Oh, and another $450 – $1050 for accommodations. Hey, MBV never claimed to be a band of the people.

Britney At Coachella?

As the countdown to festival season begins, some fests are happy to announce their line-ups (Langerado!) while others prefer to hold back. Keep people guessing. Build the anticipation. Of course that starts the rumor mills churnin’, and the first rumors about Coachella come from Rolling Stone, who are speculating that Britney Spears will make her way to the heralded festival this year.

The thought is that Britney will do a dance tent set, as Madonna did in 2006. Interestingly, Britney’s touring schedule has a big gap in it between stops in L.A. and Anaheim, California, on Saturday, April 18, smack-dab in the middle of the fest. Other acts in the rumor mill considering stops at Coachella are The Pretenders, The Killers, Keane, We Are Scientists and festival vets Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In other festival news, Rolling Stone also reports that sources close to Phish say the band will headline Bonnaroo for two nights. It would be Trey Anastasio’s fifth time on the Bonnaroo stage, and Phish’s announcement in October that they’ll play three dates in 2009 makes the idea even more likely. VIP tickets and pre-sales go out with 2008, so if all this excitement is enough for you, hurry up and invest in the rumors now.
