Seriously though, is this becoming a thing now? Like the Black Lips before him, Devendra Banhart revealed to Paste that he’ll likely be collaborating with the Gza on an upcoming track. They’ve even gone back and forth a few times already in the writing/sketching process. Aside from that, details are sparse, but there were some entertaining bits. One, Gza heard Banhart’s single “Baby” from Rza and independently felt compelled to freestyle over it. Two, this partially spawned from a party Rza and Banhart both DJ’ed separately. And three, when the two met they (logically) discussed atomic energy in depth. Still though, weird stuff. Maybe Liquid Swords has just been coming up on everyone’s shuffle at the same times… (Via: Paste)

We told you in June all about how Devendra Banhart’s gearing up to make his major label debut this fall, Warner Bros. set to release What Will We Be on October 27th. By taking a trip over to Banhart’s MySpace page you can stream “Baby,” a aired out shuffler whose guitar tones sound genuinely African at times. Plus, his voice sounds great—check it out.

After covering The Velvet Underground & Nico with a group of musical collaborators including Devendra Banhart and members of MGMT for the first iteration of his Record Club, Beck has opted to focus his second effort on Songs of Leonard Cohen and has posted his cover of “Suzanne” on his Record Club’s website. Collaborators include Devendra and MGMT again, along with members of Wolfmother and Little Joy.

The website describes the Record Club project as “an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day.” Relying on spontaneity (nothing is rehearsed or arranged beforehand), the group selects an album “to be reinterpreted and used as a framework.” A track is posted to the Record Club website once every week, and the recordings tend to be rough renditions, especially since they are frequently the first takes of the day. “There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens,” the site claims.

Check out the cover of “Suzanne” here, and be sure to check the Record Club’s website over the next few weeks for more covers from Songs of Leonard Cohen.

Marriage records promotes this new Little Wings track as “Sunday morning summer music”, but Kyle Field’s vocals sound as crackly as the Autumn leaves that will be falling in a month or so. As Little Wings, Field is perhaps most known as part of Devendra Banhart’s Golden Apples Of The Sun compilation that established the name of freak folk a few years back.

The present single comes after a two year period of silence after 2007’s awesome Soft Pow’r LP, although Field has also recently designed a few skateboard decks. The interest in skateboarding gives further insight into the possibility that Field and his cracking voice are reverting to middle school maturity.

This October, freak folk fans around the world will have even more reason to rejoice: At some point during that month, Devendra Banhart will release his latest album via Warner. The cover art for the album is above, and the album is titled:

What
Will We
Be

Intentionally or not, the title brings to mind the poetry of ee cummings (both in terms of the spacing and the content). The album was recorded with Band of Bees‘ Paul Butler, and features a backing band of Devendra regulars, including Megapuss‘ Greg Rogove, Little Joy’s Rodrigo Amarante, Luckey Remington, and Noah Georgeson.

Tracklisting:

01 Can’t Help but Smiling
02 Angelika
03 Baby
04 Goin’ Back
05 First Song for B
06 Last Song for B

Devendra Banhart is back on the scene with a new record ready to spin spin spin this Autumn. Recorded in a home in the northern California town of Bolinas, the currently untitled full-length was produced in tandem by Banhart and Paul Butler of Band Of Bees. The now beard-less “psychedelic minstrel” is also in the process of finding a label home for this, his sixth LP, having left XL.
Beck has announced that he is embarking on a new project entitled Record Club, and it’s a pretty exclusive club. Every week Beck will have an unrehearsed, one-day session with another artist (such as MGMT, Devendra Banhart, or Jamie Lidell) and record a classic album to be posted on his website. First up on the list of classics to be tackled is The Velvet Underground & Nico, and his version of “Sunday Morning” has already been released as a bonus 7″. This project brought to you, for free, courtesy of the internet.

After years and years of trying to convince the world that they were better than not only the Beatles but anyone whose ever even looked at or thought about a musical instrument, Oasis has enlisted the Hairy Fairy, aka Devendra Banhart, to remix the next single from the band’s new album Dig Out Your Soul. He chose jug band burner “Get Off Your High Horse Lady,” which you have to register at the Oasis community to actually hear. We did that and still couldn’t, so we’re going to just repost what the Oasis fans had to say about it on the message board…

bharper
Haha its quite good!

vashuclash
weird and equally piontless

snazzmaster
doesnt work for me

bergkamp2004
doesnt play

brightmeister
bad song to remix tbh, not bad tho, still as awful as the original song

dudacough
not workin for me

MasterNova
I prefer album version. Of course with it’s Indian theme, it feels very Jamaican to me. Anyone else? That strumming acoustic in the background really sets a tone different than the other ‘Techno’ bits that are usually inter-laced in remixes.

- All in all this sounds like a completely different song, which I gather it is supposed to. A little low key and monotoninous for me though. Also, I guess due to popularity of it right now, can’t access whole version and it is pretty laggy.

.Rubber.Soul.
Why remix this song?

It would be like painting a turd purple. Pointless and stinky.

shakermakerman
its crap

speller
it doesnt work

dudacough
ok it’s working now for me.

rather cool actually. Nice twist to it.
Still prefer the album version, but it’s still a good remix.

bigbri1973
it’s ok, very chilled.

fatbobslim
Not playing for me either… grrr.

soldier~on
Cool but i still like the album version better

Register here to join in on the fun!

It was a star studded affair last week at Brooklyn's Bell House. And while many of the celebrities in the audience were there to see Vetiver, Tripwire photographer Sarahana asked us to list These United States first because they were her favorite. Words and photos by Sarahana

Vetiver, Papercuts and These United States at the Bell House last week was a pretty stellar line-up, and probably a reaffirmation that this spacious barn-like room in Gowanus, with killer late night meat pies no less, is one of the best places to see new music in New York City (Sufjan Stevens was present, and someone told me that Devendra Banhart was around, too).

[These United States]

The show was opened by These United States, probably the best known unknown band. In their short history of having toured relentlessly, they must’ve played with a thousand bands by now, and it seems like everyone who’s ever worked with them nothing but adores them. After playing a charged and sweaty sweat, which you can consider their hallmark, the ever so people-friendly frontman Jesse Elliott manned the merchandise table as is his tradition. A girl asked me in confusion, “If he’s the singer, why is he sitting at the merch table?” Because he’s awesome?

[Papercuts]

Vetiver’s singer Andy Cabic said that people have told him their music put them to sleep. While the music was soothing enough to transport one to the comfort of sleep, and the set length quite generous, there was too much charm on stage for that to actually happen. He also asked if the person who had written to him earlier saying he was going to drive down from Maine to catch the show after work had made it, and he had.

[Vetiver]

The soundtrack for the latest Carlos Cuaron film, Rudo y Cursi, is something your going to want to get your hands on come Cinco de Mayo, when it is released on iTunes. The film’s soundtrack, which will be released on Nacional Records, will feature (among others) Devendra Banhart and Black Lips covering regional Mexican songs.

Along with Devendra and the Lips, the soundtrack will feature music from Juana Molina, Nortec Collective, Dios Malos, and a cover of “I Want You to Want Me” sung by Gael Garcia Bernal — the star of Rudo y Cursi — in, you guessed it, Spanish. As well as the iTunes release on May 5, another digital release is set for May 19, and it will be available to purchase physically at retail locations on June 9.

Diego Luna will be joining Bernel on screen once more in the film. The two actors also starred in Y Tu Mama Tambien, and their roles in Rudo y Cursi will mark their first reunion since the 2001 film. You can view the trailer here.

Well, to be fair, the “more” refers to The Orb and Etienne de Crecy, who along with Devendra Banhart, Chemical Brothers and the Murder City Devils have been added to the official line-up at the Coachella festival.

According to the L.A. Weekly [via The Daily Swarm], Coachella has a new web ‘zine called Coachella Digital, which yesterday confirmed what we told you about Amy Winehouse, and also announced the addition of five new acts to the roster. As the Weekly points out, none of them are U2, Pavement or The Smiths, but it’s still a nice little surprise.

The addition of Devendra Banhart, The Orb, Chemical Bros., Murder City Devils and Etienne de Crecy brings the total of acts scheduled to appear up to 125 — still two shy of last year’s bill.
