It’s been a week of early 90s Grunge flashbacks; to the sweet days when an old flannel, ripped up jeans, and unruly hair was our daily-do, and Eddie Vedder was our idea of a golden-grunge god. (Ok, ok maybe we never got the memo to retire our flannel, or buy a hairbrush when the millennium hit, but really can you blame us?) At least we’ve been able to catch a ride on the Seattle-nostalgia-bandwagon this week, with the recent reissue of Pearl Jam’s Ten, just 18 years after it’s original release– and yes, we can’t believe it’s been that long either. In lieu of it all, we’ve decided to bring you back to the days when all you wanted to do was move to Seattle and play in a garage band, and “Jeremy” became one of the most controversial videos to hit the MTV airwaves.

Pearl Jam released Ten as their first studio album in 1991, bringing the grime of grunge to the mainstream. It wasn’t long after the release, that the Seattle scene began to explode, spurring an uproar among angst-filled teens and young-adults. “Alive” brought Pearl Jam into the MTV video stream, and soon after, with the release of “Jeremy” the band found itself under intense scrutiny for the controversial video that accompanied the single. Vedder had originally wrote the song based upon a news article about a high school student killing himself in front of his classmates, and when it came time to release a video for the troubling song, the graphic imagery of Jeremy putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger caused MTV to place restrictions on the violent image, forcing Pearl Jam to release a censored, edited version that was MTV-friendly.

After the release of “Jeremy”, Pearl Jam shied away from making music videos, as they wanted fans to focus on the content of their music over the videos, and in 1996 the band was accused of influencing a school shooting in Moses Lake, Washington, because of the graphic imagery for the “Jeremy” video. Regardless of any accusations against Pearl Jam, we have to say, we’d love to take a trip back to the good ol’ days when the Eddie Vedder intensity was raring, but for now we can just sit back in our flannel shirts, and let the crazy look in Vedder’s eye ignite the flame of the grunge-love back into our ears.

Since we just told you about The Shins parting ways with their long time record label Sub Pop… possibly forever, we deemed it only necessary to bring you back to the fresh young days of The Shins’ success when Oh, Inverted World was just a newly released record from a few New Mexico-born Indie-rock hopefuls, and “New Slang” was just some song Natalie Portman made Zach Braff listen to in that movie Garden State.

James Mercer started the Shins as a side-project while he was working with Flake Music. Flake dissembled, and Mercer began putting greater focus on The Shins, taking influences from the likes of The Smiths and The Cure and integrating their stylings into his song writing. The end product of Mercer’s skilled songwriting chops mixed with the talent of the rest of the band’s members led to the creation of The Shins’ trademark sound, which eventually got the band signed on to Sub Pop records in 2001.

The Shins released their first album, Oh, Inverted World, off of Sub Pop in 2001. The album was critically acclaimed upon release, but took some time to catch up to the success of what it is now known for. It wasn’t until three years later, in 2004, that The Shins began gaining exposure when the now-cult-classic film Garden State used their music on the soundtrack. The film marketed The Shins to a wider audience, causing the band to gain prominence; inevitably giving The Shins the momentum they needed to be considered the indie rock veterans we see them them now.

We’re not sure why the Shins would want to separate themselves from Sub Pop, but what we do know is that the pair have put out some signature records in the past eight years, and we’ll be curious to see if the band will be able to produce another classic like “New Slang” on this writing hiatus of theirs. For now, the video will just have to do.

Since last month had a Friday the 13th too, we decided to forego the creepy video this time around and pay homage to Devo’s decision to play their 1978 debut Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in it’s entirety.

Not only did they announce they would play Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in it’s entirety at the London Kentish Town Forum on Mar 6, but they announced they will be putting out a new record for the first time in two decades as well (plus ATP and SxSW), so how could we not pay homage?

Known for its hits like “Mongoloid” and “Gut Feeling”, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, has become a staple album for the late 1970s and 80s new wave scene. The album was produced by Brian Eno at the behest of David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Ironically, the recording sessions were a source of frustration for Eno and Devo. Eno found the group unwilling to experiment or deviate from their early demos of recorded songs. Devo later admitted that “we were overtly resistant to Eno’s ideas. He made up synth parts and really cool sounds for almost every part of the album, but we used them on three or four songs.”[from Wiki]. Also ironic is that the only song to get an official video was their cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. But as we all know, they went on to “Whip It” later, making music video history.

“She Don’t Use Jelly” from Transmissions from the Satellite Heart is the Lips biggest radio hit to date. The song became popular after being featured on Beavis and Butt-Head nearly a year after the album’s release. It is still their highest charting single to date (and the only to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100), even entering the top 10 of the Modern Rock Tracks chart. “She Don’t Use Jelly” is one of the few pre-The Soft Bulletin songs still played at the band’s shows, usually preceded by a video of Jon Stewart introducing the song on The Jon Stewart Show.

Wiki: The success of the song garnered the band a guest spot on the TV show Beverly Hills, 90210, in which they played live at the show’s hangout, The Peach Pit, where supporting character Steve Sanders (portrayed by actor Ian Ziering) remarked, “You know, I’ve never been a big fan of alternative music, but these guys rocked the house!”

As we told you earlier, INXS’ Michael Hutchence-replacement is now living in his car after being kicked out of the band. We deemed it only necessary to bring you guys back to the good old days of INXS this Friday; to the days before masturbating-related deaths and bad reality T.V. shows scarred the band’s success.

And what better way to do that than with the video for their hit “New Sensation”, from 1989?

Formed by the Farriss brothers in 1977, the Austrailian new wavers gained international success throughout the 1980’s with singles like “New Sensation”, “Never Tear us Apart”, and “Need You Tonight”. The band continued making an influential mark on the music industry until 1997, when Michael Hutchence, the band’s lead singer, known for his good looks, signature sound, and sly charm, “passed away.” We put passed away in quotation marks, because the singer was found dead in his Sydney hotel room on INXS’ world tour, apparently due to masturbatory causes. Some said Hutchence’s death was suicide, but many believe that the evidence left at the scene (a belt, and Hutchence’s naked body), pointed to death by autoerotic asphyxiation, aka cutting off the oxygen levels to your brain while you get busy. We guess Hutchence was just trying to find some new sensations…

A heroic death, we think not, but Hutchence’s tragic passing forced INXS to take a year off from touring, only to finally succumb to the low-blow we call reality television. The band had a worldwide search on their show, trying to find its new lead singer. The lucky winner ended up being the now unfortunate JD Fortune. Maybe INXS will learn from their mistakes, and look beyond the land of American Idol wanna-be’s for their next lead singer.

“New Sensation” was the third single off of INXS’ album Kick from 1987, and the song rose to number 3 on Billboard ’s Hot 100 in the U.S. In the vein of all things 80s the video has its fair share of choppy cinematography, flashy graphics, and the classic front man hot shots (aka close ups of Michael Hutchence’s face and fancy side-steppin’ dance moves). The video, and single is a real gem, and we think if Mr. Fortune would have taken some more tips from the late Hutchence’s fierce front man qualities shown in this video, then maybe the poor gent wouldn’t be living out of his car now.

Yeah, we went there. It is Friday the 13th after all, and when diving into the video vaults there are few videos that raise the hair on the back of our collective necks more than this Willy Wonka-inspired video for Marilyn Manson’s “Dope Hat”.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s no denying the impact Marilyn Manson had, not only on music culture, but American culture as a whole. From lawsuits to being banned from performing, controversy always followed these guys around in their heyday, often for utilizing questionable imagery and lyrical content. Advocates of nonconformity and iconoclasm, the band and their members took their names from combining the first name of an iconic female sex symbol and the last name of an iconic mass murderer or serial killer, doing so to demonstrate the odd dichotomy of society (American society, in particular). Seriously, that reason alone makes this a perfect Friday the 13th video.

Starting out as Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids in 1990, they took on the stage names of Marilyn Manson, Daisy Berkowitz and Olivia Newton Bundy, respectively. They were soon joined by Madonna Wayne Gacy, while Bundy was replaced by Gidget Gein, who was later replaced by Twiggy Ramirez because of an ongoing heroin addiction. In 1991, drummer Fred Streithorst joined the band, with the stage name Sara Lee Lucas.

While “Get Your Gunn” was the first official video, Marilyn Manson started their ascension into stardom on the heels of the incredibly creepy third single, “Dope Hat”. Despite being banished to late-night only airplay on MTV, the video featuring Manson in the role of Willy Wonka in a shock-horror version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory eventually led to the development of the hour-long Remix album, Smells like Children. The album’s fifteen tracks of covers, remixes, and bizarre sonic experiments also included the band’s version of the Eurythmics‘ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, which would prove to be Marilyn Manson’s first legitimate hit.

The Vegas odds of Bruce Springsteen playing “Born In The USA” during his Superbowl half-time performance were 2-1. It was also tabbed as the most popular choice by bookies to either start or close his set, but the Boss would not have it. The Boss wasn’t having it.

Turns out the Boss was more interested in hawking his new wares and sliding his crotch into cameras. So we decided with this week’s installment of Flashback vids, we’d go back to a simpler time. When a fresh faced Courtney Cox (and fresh faced Bruce Springsteen too, check out how young he looks) just happened to be upfront and center at an E Street Band concert, making videographic history. Oh, and Superbowl half-time producers, you missed the boat on this one.

We thought since The Cure was just announced to headline (again) the final day of Coachella 2009, we should take you back to a time when Robert Smith still had asexual appeal.

The Cure have been making music videos for their singles since the video for “A Forest” in 1980. The band’s early videos are loathed by the band, quoted as being “dreadful affairs” because of their often poor quality, and “Jumping Someone Else’s Train” fits that description.

The song was on their debut LP Three Imaginary Boys, but not that version. It was on the American release of the record, which the title was changed to reflect their most popular single at the time, Boys Don’t Cry. Ironically, “Boys Don’t Cry” wasn’t even on the original and was also later added to the U.S. version, along with “Killing an Arab” (sung as “Killing Another”). Interesting side note; a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” with vocals sung by Michael Dempsey appears on the original version of The Imaginary Boys, but was removed for the American release. Smith has stated that “songs like ‘Object’ and ‘World War’ and our cover of ‘Foxy Lady’ were [Chris Parry's] choice, even though they were diabolical and I hated them.” The record company decided which songs were put on the album, as well as the cover artwork, without Robert Smith’s consent. For all Cure albums since, Smith has ensured he is given complete creative control over the final product before it goes on sale.

What? You thought we would run the video of the classical quartet faking their way through the inauguration performance? Or maybe the Arcade Fire video from the party for Obama staffers? Why would we when we can take a look back at a time when The Presidents Of The United States Of America brought their 2-string, minimalist pop rock ‘n’ roll into our living rooms? How’s that for change? Is it as good as an intro made up entirely of questions instead of statements?

Yeah, we’re being way too campy and literal with this week’s Flashback installment, but how could we resist? It’s what the Presidents were all about. The Seattle band was formed in late 1993 by Chris Ballew (basitar and lead vocals) and Dave Dederer (guitbass and backup vocals) and initially played out as a drummerless duo called “The Lo-Fis” or “The Dynamic Duo” or “Pure Frosting” before eventually settling for the name The Presidents of the United States of America. Shortly after they added drummer Jason Finn, who was also the drummer in the Sub Pop band Love Battery at the time.

Aside from the Sub Pop connections and being a pop band in the grungy Seattle scene, we give The Presidents kudos for getting signed from a cassette recording (sure it was common back then, but since cassettes are the vintage du jour thing these days, we figured we’d try to make this post cooler by mentioning it). In 1994, the Presidents signed with the tiny Seattle label PopLlama Records and released their self-titled debut in the following year. Driven by the singles “Lump”, “Peaches”, and “Kitty”, Columbia Records signed the band shortly thereafter and re-released the album in late July, 1995.

Since we couldn’t decide which song to post (a quick poll found most people split between “Peaches” and “Lump”) — and figuring we won’t be doing many more Presidents posts — we chose to run both videos. Though “Peaches” met the most critical success, the band credits “Lump” as their favorite single. Besides, who can argue with a song “Weird Al” Yankovic created a parody of?

With most of this week’s news swirling around Animal Collective, there were few reference points to help us look back in time. So we just decided to run this classic video because for his entire life, our editor thought the line “she grabbed a razor for me” was “she gave a raisin to me.”
“Been Caught Stealing” was released on the1990 album Ritual de lo Habitual and was Jane’s Addiction’s biggest hit, spending 4 weeks at #1 on the U.S. modern rock chart.

From Wikipedia: The song exhibits the band’s strong funk influences. The funk sensibilities displayed on this and other Jane’s Addiction songs inspired the Red Hot Chili Peppers to recruit Dave Navarro after John Frusciante’s temporary hiatus. Some listeners suggest that the song deals with kleptomania, though others might contend that the lyrics of the song’s chorus — “when we want something and we don’t want to pay for it” — suggest instead an anarchic theme, with the song’s protagonist refusing to recognize private property rights. The song is notable for the barking dogs in the introduction, possibly suggesting the singer is escaping from watchdogs.
