Michael Cera’s Week In Cameos Serves as Bizarre Pop Culture Time Capsule For Future Generations

CeraYes, Michael Cera has a movie coming out Friday. This is the logical reason behind much of the quirky press he’s been doing in the last week or so. But if you simply write it off as token publicity, you deny yourself the true beauty of the whole ordeal. We speak of two things in particular: the footage of Cera hanging out with the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore in New York City and his appearance in Islands’ new music video for “No You Don’t.” The former is basically exactly what you’d expect out of a combo press promo. There is pizza, dancing and a delightful video of Cera receiving a poof haircut from a fella named DJ Pauly D. The latter (which can be seen below) is an ironic anti-drug PSA where Cera trips his way through suburban parking lots, a marriage of indie rock and hallucinogenics that would surely make the directors of the “Electric Feel” video proud. When linked together, the two clips might be the best hope future civilizations have for comprehending the brief time in which MGMT, slim slacks and dudes unironically referring to themselves as “The Situation” ruled the world. Islands Spreading Vapours Across the Land

islands_vapoursWith the release of their second record on ANTI- next week, Islands are set to hit the road to spread love, valour, compassion and a busload of wanderlust across these United States and, ugh, Canada. Nick Diamonds, freshly reunited with former Islands and the Unicorns co-conspirator Jamie Thompson, better known as J’aime Tambeur, will bring Vapours to the people during a six week tour, which finds them headlining dates, as well as playing shows with Psychedelic Furs and the Happy Mondays. Yes, the Happy Mondays. While we can’t confirm whether or not Tony Wilson will be tour managing the Mondays, we can safely assume that a) Shaun Ryder will tweak out at some point and b) Bez may pull some ridiculous stunt like bungee jumping off the dam from Goldeneye or, ya know, blowing Shaun Ryder’s feces off Nick Diamond’s wrist band for $20 and a Butterfinger.

Islands Record Vapours

islands_main

In their various iterations, Islands/The Unicorns/Th’ Corn Gangg seem to have broken up and lost and/or gained members more than they’ve released actual albums. September 22nd marks the release of Islands’ third album Vapours on Anti- as well as signs of stability in the return of original Islands member Jamie Thompson. If the first Islands album was marked by erratic pop sensibilities, jumping from Beach Boys-style harmonizing to full-on orchestral rock and even to (dubious) rap, and the second was a collection of proggy, sprawling, somewhat overly ambitious epics, than what will Vapours hold? Apparently it’ll hold “moody synthesizers and drum-machine-heavy beats, while remaining firmly rooted in the classic pop sensibilities and multitude of melodic hooks that Islands is known for.” See also: A combination of their first two albums.
