A week or so ago, British media whore Lily Allen got in a tiff with Radiohead, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and Annie Lennox, claiming such “rich” artists don’t care about stopping digital piracy because, well, they’re rich! So what’d she do? She started a blog! She even named it It’s Not Alright, a clever play on her first album. (Note the URL: IDontWanttoChangetheWorld.Blogspot.com!) This all seemed a bit, um, trite, especially considering how Allen rose to stardom via buzz on file sharing networks, a string of digitally released mixtapes (which used choice samples from artists, presumably without clearing them) and the cult of MySpace. It’s even funnier because Allen claims only the “rich” artists don’t care about file sharing because they are already rich. Sorry Lily, but we’re pretty sure Billy Bragg is always looking out for the little guy, and you, well, you were born to a famous British comedian and a movie producer, so we’re guessing times weren’t too tough at the Allen household. Nevertheless, Allen seems to have recanted her mission, as It’s Not Alright has been deleted from the pages of Blogger. (See here). Guess you really didn’t want to change the world, did ya Lily.

Polly Scattergood
Polly Scattergood
Mute
Release Date: 05.19.09
The evolution of the female solo artist over the past fifteen years has been a curious one. My generation grew up on solid, strong voices with apparent themes and lyrical twists. Tori Amos, Beth Orton, and Bjork were wildly different, but carried about them an obvious gravity; even Liz Phair’s sexual irreverence was rooted in the serious problem of sexual inequality.

Through the years, this picture of the solo female as singer-songwriter has shifted in interesting and probably heartening ways; these days, we’re more than familiar with Ida Maria, Lily Allen, Marnie Stern, and Kate Nash as figures that do their share to hold up images that are strong, but with a sense of irreverence. It’s somewhere in between the perceptions of serious, earthy songwriters and saucy, somewhat edgy singers that Polly Scattergood emerges; a forceful, breathy set of vocals taking precedence over a backdrop of ethereal sound.

It’s almost as if Scattergood has taken the best moments of the last 20 years in female rock history and studied them closely. Layered between moments of bare piano tracks are synthesizer-driven beats, creating an almost shockingly poignant soundscape. From the keyboard-heavy crescendos of “I Hate The Way”, it becomes clear that Scattergood’s forte is sadness. “My doctor said I’ve got to sing a happy tune,” she sings after weaving a tale of stark heartache, creating a wonderful and wrenching ending that evokes Marissa Nadler’s best lines.

Where Scattergood makes her true mark is in the ability to weave lyrical thickness with driving melody; “Other Too Endless”, “Please Don’t Touch”, and “Bunny Club” stand out immediately as very obvious and very British singles, though each track is laced with dark and contrasting imagery. Through the course of the album, her voice becomes a uniting factor, able to traverse both the twisted and the sweet through the album’s course. “Please Don’t Touch” hits a lilting note remniscent of Allen or Nash, where “Bunny Club”’s melody simply haunts.

It’s difficult not to find Scattergood’s work compelling from the very beginning, though it may take a few listens to make sense of the record as a whole. This is by no means a medley of sounds and moods; rather, it’s a well-orchestrated whole that executes each musical shift with a smooth elegance. What’s most remarkable is that no matter how far into the depths of despair Scattergood reaches (and when she channels death by suicide as in “Untitled 27″ or by cancer in “Breathe In Breathe Out”, those depths are very deep), her work retains a strange sense of hope. Polly Scattergood succeeds in evoking the serious while nodding at the irreverent, making for a most impressive debut.

Since we have a tendency to look below the radar for our music, we decided to take a weekly look at The Populist View. We’ll stop short of calling our tastes underground, let’s just say we’re pop-culturally inept. So we’ve devised a way to keep up to date.

Its quite simple actually. We’re just going to give side by side comparisons of top ten U.S. singles from Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and the Official top ten UK singles of every week. This way we’ll always know what’s spreading the cheese for radio programmers and people who still buy music in the two most influential music markets in the world. And if this week’s list is any indication, the people want their Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga on both sides of the Atlantic!

Billboard’s top ten U.S. singles for the week of 05.28.09

You might want to refer to him as Professor Coyne from now on, because the Flaming Lips frontman is getting back to the classroom basics this August. The now veteran musician will be teaching music to students at the University of Central Oklahoma, as part of a new music program set up for the college. At least he has the hair to fit the part of the nutty professor.

The Oklahoma university has set up a new Academy of Contemporary Music, which is focused on giving students an in-depth look at the music industry from seasoned professionals. The school is enlisting the help of industry giants like Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen’s producer) and Warner Bros. Records General Manager Tom Biery among a few others, who will be teaching classes in guitar, bass, drum, and vocal performance, as well as music production.

Scott Booker, who is head of the Flaming Lips’ artist management company, is the head behind the new academy. Working alongside the university and state officials, Booker was able to bring the new academy to Oklahoma, with the help and partnership of the U.K’s Academy of Contemporary Music, which was founded in 1995, according to PopMatters.

The new program will provide some of the best music industry education available at a collegiate level, and classes will take place off of, you guessed it, Flaming Lips Alley in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district. The idea of Coyne in a classroom is not that ridiculous of an idea, but we’re pretty sure Win Butler probably won’t be signing up on Coyne’s class anytime soon.

For a 21 year old being touted by international media as a fresh face of electronic music, La Roux’s Elly Jackson has a pretty good head on her shoulders. The Brixton native, who with band mate Ben Langmaid comprise the duo, carries the interview out more like a conversation between friends than for a publication, and also isn’t afraid to swear.

Playing five dates on her mini-States tour, the red-headed one stopped in San Francisco to play Popscene as part of the Club NME series — a rag of which she has also been fawned over. But the show that night proved there are some truths behind the chops. Jackson took a bit to warm up to the crowd, playing closer songs “I’m Not Your Toy” and “Bulletproof” with more enthusiasm, dancing with her beats and facing out into the crowd more. She teased the audience by leaning into the front row almost tauntingly. “Which one of you is gonna have this up on YouTube tomorrow?” she asked before screams of confirmation answered her question.

We chatted with her pre-show, and in addition to her amicable nature, she also was very cool about our extreme stuttering problem from a lack of coffee.

“God, I’m so sorry I keep fucking up these questions,” I said apologetically. “Thank you for being patient.”

“Oh, no worries,” Jackson responded. “The point is that you get them right. I’d much rather have you say it the way you want to.”

Five Questions For La Roux
How much hair product do you think you use a month to get hair as awesome as yours?
Oh, wow, I don’t know. In a month, usually one can of mousse, intense mousse. You don’t need much wax but there’s that, and also very strong hairspray.

You’re an electronic powerhouse now, but you used to be more inclined to folk music when you first started out.
It wasn’t like we decided to electronic music out of the blue or anything. It just happened really naturally. My dad taught me guitar from the age of 6 and I was introduced to all music: rock and blues, folk. As a kid I liked Joni Mitchell a lot. I guess it was just kind of natural to write in that style. I wrote songs from the age of 12 and that’s where I pulled inspiration from. If you think about it, Paul Simon is pretty synthy — and you can quote me on that — people like Stevie Wonder also can fall into this. When I met Ben I’d written a lot of songs in a folk kind of area, and the more we wrote together, it just became a bit passé to us and we took it out of the tracks to start to go more dance.

For you, where is the line between creating original content and paying tribute?
I think there is a bit of both in what we do. It’s kind of annoyed me when people have taken the 50s or the 60s [to incorporate into their music], and people don’t bat an eyelid, but when you put the 80s in, people go, “What the fuck is wrong with you?” I mean, you weren’t there in the 50s, and then the counter is “But don’t you like rock and roll?” It’s like the 80s have this tainted thing on it. There is a lot of the revival of the leggings and spandex and American Apparel going on, but there was a classy cool romantic appeal that we’re appealing to, not the neon part. More Tears For Fears side.

While I was doing research I found there’s actually a band called LeRoux, which describes themselves as “Southern Rock/New Orleans Funk/Classic Rock/Power Ballad band with excellent harmonies, tight musicianship.” How do you differ?
Sounds like a big jerk off to me. What a bunch of assholes. Who says that about themselves?!

They do! On their own website, even.
That’s so contradictive as well, all the descriptions. Why do you need to write it down when it’s…ah, never mind (laughs).

Since you guys just got off a UK tour with her, is Lily Allen as horrible as she’s made out to be?
Do people think she is horrible? (laughs) To say what we think…like, when everyone else does that in their friend group, they’re not seen as bad. But when it’s written down and the facial expression is done, then it gets taken out of context. If one of your friends said it, you wouldn’t even remember if it sounds horrible or bitchy. She’s really not like that at all. But you have to know it to understand it. Someone went on my MySpace and left a comment that said “You’re such a bitch!” And that really hurts, because really, really, really, really I’m not a bitch, but now I can’t change your mind because you think I’m a cunt.

He’s a teacher by day and Karl Malone’s cousin, that in itself should merit a listen to Kenan Bell. But the La Crescenta, CA hip-hop artist has recently dropped his “remix collective project” –- entitled Good News: The Mix-Tape — and with remixes of songs by artists as wide-ranging as Pink Floyd, Lily Allen, Gang Gang Dance, Jose Gonzalez, Peter, Bjorn & John, Duran Duran and Neil Diamond, how couldn’t you want to listen?

Backed by a full indie-band, the idea was originally conceived when a Smiths remix Kenan did for fun managed to find its way onto a Morrissey fan site, and then to Morrissey himself. For his part, Bell says, “I wanted to rap over The Smiths because people said it couldn’t be done.” For Good News, Bell and his production team reworked songs of Bell’s choosing: gathering the songs, pulling samples and writing the lyrics all in a matter of a few days — some of the songs written and tracked on the spot, in one take.

It looks like Bruce Springsteen is making his way through the festival circuit this spring and summer.
While we’re a little curious as to how “Born In the U.S.A.” will pan out over on the other side of the pond, the sold out music festival — which will take place on June 26-28 — and the its organizers are very excited to have Springsteen grace their stage. “I’m so pleased that Bruce Springsteen has agreed to come to Worthy Farm for the first time,” said festival chief Michael Eavis. “He’s one of the all-time rock legends and I’m confident that this will be one of our best shows ever.”

Just last week, Emily Eavis, who helps run the festival, dismissed rumors that The Rolling Stones and U2 would be headlining the festival, but said “I’m knocked out that we’ve managed to get Bruce to play. It’s the icing on the cake of this year’s bill, which I’m sure will take everyone’s breath away when we announce the full details.”

So far, only a hand full of acts along with Bruce have been confirmed for the festival, including Bon Iver, Lilly Allen, and Franz Ferdinand. Among other artists rumored to play are Neil Young,Blur, Coldplay, and Oasis.

by Miguel Banuelos

As February is traditionally all about love, we figured this month we would focus on three things we love: Lily Allen, SXSW and old movies. On with the show…

Let’s start with the fact that we are so happy to have Lily Allen back, both musically and personally. She’s an all-time AEC fave, and with last week’s release of It’s Not Me, It’s You, she’s cemented her status with us. Miss Allen played her first stateside show last week (which we very sadly missed), and she seems to be everywhere. The TODAY Show? The Tonight Show? Oprah? Ellen? Wow, you’ve come along way, baby. But one of the things that made Lily such a success from the beginning was her willingness to embrace technology. We were so pleased to finally see her get on Twitter. She’s only been on a fortnight or so, but she’s already racking up the tweets. The medium is perfect for her so we’re glad she’s on board. Follow Lily’s tweets here.

Lily Allen – “The Fear”

One of our favorite February pastimes is discovering new U.K. bands just by looking through the SXSW band listings. March in Austin has become the most concentrated U.K. band “coming out party” in the past few years, so most of the folks who we’ve only read or heard about finally reach our shores for this event. Naturally, the minute the band list comes out, we fire up the browsers and start clicking away.

This year is no exception, with about 200 U.K. bands descending on Texas in just a few weeks. As a public service, and since we were going to do it anyway, we figured we’d give you a head start on this year’s pickings with our early choices. This should give you a few weeks to check them out ahead of the BBQ and booze. In the interest of space and brevity, we’ll be skipping the likes of Primal Scream and Glasvegas because you should already know about them, as well as Ipso Facto and The Whip, as they have already been mentioned here before, so we figure you know enough to check them out. This time, we’ll cover bands listed A-K, and we’ll follow up with the second half next month. Here are our recommendations.

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip
Reminds us of a mix of Lo-fidelity All Stars, Atmosphere and Aesop Rock (and not jut for the hip-hop beards). Their interesting lyricism and unique beats should be a good addition of hip-hop to your SXSW line-up.

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip – “Thou Shalt Always Kill”

The DeBretts
Just enough Artrocker cred, feminine sass and all the right influences, this London trio recalls some Siouxsie, some YYYs and good tunes as well. They have opened for AEC-approved The Noisettes, so they flock to good company (always a good sign). Our favorite tracks so far are “Is It Me” and “Turn the Lights On.”

Fanfarlo
A bit more subdued than our usual fare, Fanfarlo recall Andrew Bird, Rufus Wainwright and Aqualung in the best ways possible. Might be the perfect SXSW hangover Friday afternoon band. Hopefully, touring with Snow Patrol has honed their big stage performance chops. Check out their Black Cab Sessions performance as well.

The Gallows
We considered skipping this write-up as this band has been pretty well covered for the last year by most of the UK press. But since we have never mentioned them, we figured it would be at least fair of us to put them on the list. The tough tattooed outfit has brought “hardcore” into the music headlines in the UK, with a special British touch and a lead singer who looks cool enough to have made it into a U.S. Converse campaign without anyone in this country knowing his band?! Result.

The Gin Riots
Named after a 1730s story of punters breaking into the Gordon’s Gin factory and flushing the streets and its residents with gin for three days, this band performed for the premiere of Guy Ritchie’s Rocknrolla. Armed with enough sing-along choruses to fill a stadium, these guys might be your next Libertines.

Goldilocks
Akin to FADER cover girl Little Boots, Goldilocks is in the current singer/rapper/electro-girl about town. She’s probably more personality than talent, but the show could be a good time, and will probably include loads of good-looking kids ready to party. Maybe Tinchy Stryder could show up for a guest appearance? That would be nice. Even if he doesn’t, and the show ends up being less than thrilling, we are willing to bet that Goldilocks show will be the best place to hear some new dubstep/grime in Austin all week.

Hot Leg
This is Justin Hawkins’ new band. You may remember him from the metal revivalist outfit known as The Darkness. We haven’t heard much, but it would probably be a show worth checking out, at least to hear him hit one or two of those insane metal crescendos.

The Hot Melts
Rock and roll enough to tour with the Eagles of Death Metal, we’d tip these guys to be in an iTunes commercial sooner than later. Think the Fratellis with a bit more punk edge and definitely hummable.

The Hot Melts – “(I Wish I Had) Never Been In Love”

Hatcham Social
Another band we weren’t sure if we should skip over, but we haven’t written about them yet. Part of the Fierce Panda posse, this trio is whip smart and just twee enough. They have shared or will share the stage with Ipso Facto, the Walkmen, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Crystal Stilts. They also count Tim Burgess among their followers. That’s almost always a good sign. “Give Me The Gift” is a good pace to start.

Hatcham Social – “So So Happy Making”

Honey Ryder
Named after one of our favorite Bond characters, this pop duo are not trying to hip. This is unabashed pop music. Think Girls Aloud ballads and Sophie Ellis Bextor or Natasha Bedingfield, not Kylie or Girls Aloud dance hits. Could be that we are just letting our dreams of a stateside Girls Aloud show influence us to mention this here, and this could just be wish fulfillment, but at least we can admit that.

Honey Ryder – “Knight Nurse”

Inner City Pirates
Bouncy silly day-glo fun, the Inner City Pirates have no pretense, a radio-friendly sensibility when it comes to choruses, and will probably get more pogo-ing per square inch at shows than any other SXSW act.

Inner City Pirates – “Cockney Sparra

Jack Beats
A good selection if you are looking for at least one purely dance floor related DJ/club show at South By. Good old fashioned jacking beats, remixes and lots of bass; simple and to the point. Look for Jack Beats at plenty of afterhours parties, as we can’t see this doing much for folks at 10pm.

Lady Sovereign – “Got You Dancing” (Jack Beats Remix)”

We’ll finish out the list next month. That should be enough to tide you over for now.

Finally, our other favorite thing in the world is watching old movies. And we finally had a chance to catch a cult classic that involves UK British icons and great music: Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains. Recently released on DVD, the film is a great touchstone of early punk rock that includes pubescent Diane Lane and Laura Dern, but should be seen by AEC-minded readers for the performances by the film’s snotty punk rockers, The Looters. The fictional group’s lead singer is Ray Winstone, but the band he is leading is a veritable super group of British punk rock including The Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones and Paul Cook, and one of our all time heroes, Paul Simonon of The Clash. This is a worthwhile rental, to say the least.

The Looters – “Join The Professionals”

Stay tuned for more SXSW picks next month. If you have any tips or recommendations, let us know.

‘Til then,
the AEC

The U.K. might be thinking about placing an internet piracy tax on its residents, but at least British musicians know how to have some fun for free. London based songstress Lily Allen is currently previewing her new record It’s Not Me, It’s You one week prior to release on her MySpace page.

The merry-melodied Capitol Records artist has put the 12-track-album up on her MySpace music page for anyone to stream for free, but of course the page is also adorned with advertisements encouraging listeners to pre-order the album on iTunes or directly on MySpace.

And in an attempt to take social networking promotion to the next level — see also the category of “is this really necessary?” — along with the free stream on her MySpace page, Allen has also branched out onto Facebook where she has a new application called “Lilypoke.” According to Allen’s website, Lilypoke will be “the only poking application you’ll want to add to your Facebook page,” giving you the option to throw a bottle of champagne, a platform shoe, sunglasses, a handbag, oh and of course, the new album at friends. We’d be curious as to what the Amy Winehouse poke application would look like — maybe it could involve throwing a stay in rehab at a friend you just can’t bring yourself to have an intervention for — but Allen is certainly using internet social networking to it’s utmost promotional abilities, and we’re sure it will please her throngs of adoring teenage fans.

Now we just sit back and wait to see if “Lilypoke” takes over “Tom Waits’ Magical Trunk” as the top band-related Facebook app.
