Liverpudlians rejoice. Remember that Liverpool Echo Arena show Moz abruptly/rightfully walked out on after being struck in the head with a flying cup of beer the other day? It’s in the process of being rescheduled! According to NME, the concert’s promoters are working overtime to put things back together again. “Event organisers are working with the artists representatives to explore all ways of restaging the abandoned concert,” the statement says. “Everyone involved in the show is deeply upset that the actions of one individual have spoiled the evening for the thousands of genuine fans and for Morrissey himself.

Morrissey just can’t catch a break. Two weeks ago, he collapsed onstage at a concert and was rushed to a hospital. Then, under medical advice, he canceled his very next show. Now, the news is out that on Saturday night, someone went ahead and threw a drink at his head. The former Smiths frontdude was in the middle of his set’s second song, “Black Cloud,” when a fan at Liverpool’s Echo Arena hit him with a filled plastic container. After checking his hair, a pissed Morrissey stopped the show, told the crowd “Goodnight,” and abandoned the stage. The crowd attempted to lure the bard back by chanting his name, but it was all for naught. It wasn’t long before a crew-member took the stage and explained the show had been canceled and that the audience would receive a refund.

The above YouTube clip reveals all, though you’ll be disappointed if you’re expecting to see Moz pull a Henry Rollins. You won’t be disappointed however, should you decide to pick up a copy of Swords, which came out last Tuesday, the 3rd.

Morrissey is one of those rare artists whose B-sides seem just as likely to be worthwhile as his singles, and we obviously mean that in the best way possible. For this reason, news of his upcoming SWORDS B-sides record (due out November 3 in America and October 26 across the pond) seems more than welcome. The album covers single B-sides from his last four albums that the man himself chose, and will be supported by a tour that begins in Seattle in late-November. Tracklists and dates commence…

SWORDS Tracklist:

Good Looking Man About Town
Don’t Make Fun Of Daddy’s Voice
If You Don’t Like Me, Don’t Look At Me
Ganglord
My Dearest Love
The Never-Played Symphonies
Sweetie-Pie
Christian Dior
Shame Is The Name
Munich Air Disaster 1958
I Knew I Was Next
It’s Hard To Walk Tall When You’re Small
Teenage Dad On His Estate
Children In Pieces
Friday Mourning
My Life Is A Succession Of People Saying Goodbye
Drive-In Saturday
Because Of My Poor Education

Limited edition bonus disc:

Black Cloud
I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris

Once again, Morrissey finds something to get upset about: now, the singer is taking to the internet to refute claims by former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke that he was dismissed via post-it note. In an interview with Eye Weekly, Rourke was asked about a rumored story about his 1986 dismissal from the band in which Morrissey left a post-it on the bassist’s windshield that read, “Andy – you have left The Smiths. Goodbye and good luck, Morrissey.”

In the interview, Rourke affirmed that the story was true, adding that “I thought it was a parking ticket, but it was a lot worse than that.”

Morrissey, upon reading Rourke’s comments, took to his True to You fansite and unleashed the following missive:

I am forced to defend myself – again – from a comment made by Andy Rourke last week on the eyeweekly website. It is a recurring comment whereby Andy confirms that his dismissal from the Smiths was made via a handwritten postcard from me telling Andy “you have left the Smiths.” I would like to state to anyone interested in the truth of this matter that no such postcard was ever written by me, and no dismissal postcard was ever placed on Andy’s car with my knowledge or consent, and I am naturally irked that such an alleged deed has gone down in the fairy tale footnotes of Smiths lore. If such a postcard ever existed, it is likely that an unfunny stunt was played on Andy by someone attempting Morrissey-scrawl – easily done. Secondly, Andy’s “dismissal” from the Smiths would not be a decision solely made by me, and would not be announced by me on a note bearing only my name, and it would also not be executed by a handwritten note carelessly thrown onto the hood of a car (or window-wipers, as has often been reported.) Doesn’t anyone have the wit to work this one out?

Morrissey is sending two box sets of solo material our way in the very near future. Featuring tracks spanning from 1988 to 1995, these collections are said to include tunes such as ‘Suedehead’, ‘Everyday Is Like Sunday’, ‘Piccadilly Palare’, ‘Disappointed’ and ‘The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get.’ The first set drops on October 12 and features the first part of this chronology, followed by the release of the second part on November 2. We should add that both sets will be sporting nifty lidded boxes, possibly a deal-sealing detail. Throw a pompadour wig in there and it’s a done deal. Check out track lists below.
In March, the editors over at Nerve posted their picks for the Forty Sexiest Frontwomen in Rock History, and after receiving a bit of flack for their picks, the editors have struck again; only this time (more importantly) with the Forty Sexiest Frontmen in Rock History.

Unlike most ‘hottest whatever in rock’ lists, Nerve has managed to avoid sticking to the ties of classic cliches, keeping Sting away from the number one position, and instead making the tantric Police frontman stay put at number 26. Sure, Sting is sexy, but we don’t think he’s the sexiest frontman that has ever walked on a stage, but we have to say we think he is far sexier than Bono, (can we please think back to the Joshua Tree-era when he had a mullet?), who landed at 24. We are calling Nerve out on their Bono pick as a major league strike.

Also on the list, Red Hot Chili Pepper’s frontman, Anthony Kiedis at number 21, Jeff Buckley and Kurt Cobain helped round out the top 15, while Bruce Springsteen landed himself at lucky number 7 on the Sexy Man list. We will keep any bias we might feel towards Bruce out of the way, only to say that still after the days of his prime, the New Jersey boy is still looking quite nice (though he’s old enough to be some of our fathers).

Finally, to top off the list the Nerve editors chose Morrissey as their number three, David Bowie as their number two and Prince as their ultimate hot man. Personally, we would have much rather seen Mr. Glenn Danzig at number one (opinions of the writer do not reflect those of The Tripwire) than a man who has referred to himself as a symbol. At least they didn’t throw Michael Jackson onto the list.

Universal today became the first major label to sign a deal with People’s Music Store, a new London-based digital download service that will let fans market and “sell” their favorite tracks, earning credit toward additional track downloads.

The deal licenses more than 300,000 UMG tracks to the service, including songs by Amy Winehouse, Duffy, U2 and Morrissey. It doubles the stores total catalog to 600,000 mp3s.

Basically, here’s how it works. Individual users can set up their own digital record stores, design storefronts, choose music from the licensed catalog, write reviews and market their store in blogs or on Facebook or MySpace using widgets from the site. Every time someone downloads a track from their “store,” they receive 10 percent of the sale price in reward points toward future downloads.

Of course the site also works with labels and artists — more than 1,000 stores already exist, from labels like Rough Trade or artists like Nightmares on Wax. Here’s to the future of free music… and apparently free labor as well.

Though Morrissey’s vegetarian rants during his Coachella set were priceless, we find it hard to believe no one is talking about Paul McCartney’s set at the festival. Or rather, what was being displayed on the jumbo-tron behind the musician while he played “Got to Get You Into My Life” during his set.

Visuals from the new game The Beatles: Rock Band were unexpectedly streamed live as McCartney (who is also vegetarian as you can see) played the Beatles’ song for fans. As we have told you already, the game isn’t due out till 09.09.09, but the McCartney-set-teaser is making us assume the song will make it onto the final product and at least some of the tablature is done.

During McCartney’s set photo privileges were restricted, but we still managed to get some video footage of the performance for you to see and relish in. McCartney’s website has also confirmed that the footage behind the artist was indeed the new Beatles game, minus the notes and lyrics. As cool an unexpected as this is, we’re still trying to figure out what the big deal over Morrissey’s vocal complaints about the smell of burning flesh and “dry heaving during ‘Girlfriend’ in a coma from the smell of BBQ,” as one of our photographers explained, really is.

He’s a teacher by day and Karl Malone’s cousin, that in itself should merit a listen to Kenan Bell. But the La Crescenta, CA hip-hop artist has recently dropped his “remix collective project” –- entitled Good News: The Mix-Tape — and with remixes of songs by artists as wide-ranging as Pink Floyd, Lily Allen, Gang Gang Dance, Jose Gonzalez, Peter, Bjorn & John, Duran Duran and Neil Diamond, how couldn’t you want to listen?

Backed by a full indie-band, the idea was originally conceived when a Smiths remix Kenan did for fun managed to find its way onto a Morrissey fan site, and then to Morrissey himself. For his part, Bell says, “I wanted to rap over The Smiths because people said it couldn’t be done.” For Good News, Bell and his production team reworked songs of Bell’s choosing: gathering the songs, pulling samples and writing the lyrics all in a matter of a few days — some of the songs written and tracked on the spot, in one take.

The Tripwire has the exclusive drop Bell’s version of Jose Gonzalez’ “Crosses”, and if you like it, you can check also out his Peter, Bjorn and John remix, his Lily Allen remix and his Gang Gang Dance remix.

He already managed to shock us with his scantily clad new album shots, which still have us pondering just how he and his band mates managed to keep their ‘records in tact.’ Now Morrissey has released some more shocking news; revealing his possible plans to retire in five years.

The singer, who is turning 50 this year, told Ian Camfield of XFM that the chances of him continuing his career beyond the age of 55 is incredibly slim. His logic behind such thoughts are simple. Morrissey believes that the older a musician gets, the less relevant they remain. Hear that U2?

“It’s very interesting that it’s very hard to think of anybody who ages and still manages to mean anything,” the singer said.

For a man who’s physique is fitter than most men at 30, talk of aging seems bizarre, since the former Smiths front man looks like he’s found the fountain of youth, rather than opting for a one way trip to the local retirement home.

“I assume most people lose it because they become satisfied and they achieve everything they ever set out to achieve,” he said. “More to the point, they become personally satisfied and that they’re quite happy and it doesn’t matter any more.”

Even if he does retire in five years, we can at least look to his new album, Years Of Refusal, for some lyrical pick-me-ups and classic Morrissey cynicism.

We were going to report on Morrissey’s new risque photo that will adorn the artwork of his newest single last Friday evening when everyone else did, but our editor has been waiting for the day when he could slide Screeching Weasel into a Tripwire post.
First of all, let us say the Moz has got a damn good body for someone just a few months shy of 50. Maybe he just wanted to let us know that he’s aging even more gracefully than we had hoped. The photo of Morrissey and his band (note the physique of the only band member slightly hidden from full view… I know, that’s kind of mean, but worth mentioning) is featured on the inside sleeve of his new single, “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”. To paraphrase Pitchfork, we’re curious as to how those records are staying in place? Maybe we don’t want to know.

Regardless, the photo looks almost accidental with Morrissey in a mid-hair fixing pose, lending to both the authenticity and in-the-moment nature of the shot. Which is why we refused to compare it to the obvious, and instead run it with the ultimate in in-the-moment nude band photography (per our editor’s request of course). After all, getting a shot of an entire band, naked, jumping in the air at a bowling alley had to be a pretty spontaneous moment. The photo of a naked Screeching Weasel was included in the insert which accompanied the first 200 copies of their second LP Boogadaboogadaboogada. Originally released in 1988 on Roadkill Records before being signed to Lookout!, it remains the bands best-selling album of their long discography.

Ah, the power of nudity.

By Miguel Banuelos

Happy 2009! As great as 2008 was, we are already digging into what should be a great year in British music. So let’s get right to it…

One of the worst things that 200 brought us was the surprise stroke that afflicted Long Blondes’ guitarist, Dorian Cox. With that news came the unfortunate break-up of the band, and some serious AEC heartache. But the new year has good news, not only has Cox begun to regain the use of his right hand (thanks to a bionic hand no less?!), but we have also recently read that Long Blondes lead singer Kate Jackson has plenty of plans for 2009. Not only has she recently recorded a song called “Kickstrasse” with Glasgow’s 1990s, but she is also reportedly writing new material with Bernard Butler. We’d think our love for Butler would be obvious, but in case you couldn’t guess, we figure any former member of Suede, who has since produced records for Sons and Daughters, Duffy, Manic Street Preachers, The Veils, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and countless others is pretty much a god in our eyes. Well chosen, Miss Jackson. We approve of all of the above.

Long Blondes – “Once And Never Again”

In other AEC deity news, Morrissey has spawned a new record. It’s out on February 17th on Lost Highway in the US. We have heard it, and can honestly say we are swooning. His last few efforts have been more than satisfying, but this new outing is brimming with rock and roll flair, and finally brings more of what the Morrissey live experience is all about. If you have seen Morrissey in concert, you know what we mean. And if you haven’t, you should remedy that right away. Lucky for you, Moz tickets for the US tour are going on sale now for venues all over the US (including some very intimate venues). Unlucky for us, we were shut out for NYC tickets. But we have faith.

Morrissey – “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”

The end of 2008 brought us some hot tips on plenty of new bands as well…

Right before the end of the year, we were very pleased to see Ipso Facto not once, but twice in one week. The quartet of ladies is very young, very attractive and very exciting. Their music leans toward all things dark and gothic, but with a decidedly feminine swing. Add some great looking hairdos and outfits, and this band embodies most of the things we love. We have high hopes for these ladies in 2009 and hope to see them again soon.

Ipso Facto – “Six And Three Quarters”

Coming from a totally different angle, but still so very feminine, our new pop favorite out of the UK is Alesha Dixon. Formerly a member of Mis-Teeq, Dixon has gone on to marry and divorce a member of So Solid Crew, win the Strictly Come Dancing 2007 crown (the UK’s Dancing with the Stars) and, most recently, she has released a cracking new pop gem of a single, “The Boy Does Nothing.” Sure, it’s 50 percent Beyonce and 50 percent Xtina, but to us, that’s not a bad thing. Now, we know the chances of Dixon’s music seeing release stateside is pretty slim, but we also know that we will be sadder because of that. We’ll enjoy it from afar.

Alesha Dixon on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’

Alesha Dixon – “The Boy Does Nothing”

We have also been feeling particularly “electronic” of late. Luckily, we have three new totally different acts to keep tabs on in 2009. The first is Errors, who we first heard about through Alan McGee’s “tips for 2009” list, and soon enough heard even more that helped their cause. Not only are they a McGee favorite, they are on Mogwai’s label, Rock Action, and they are pals with Sons and Daughters. Oh yeah, and the music is pretty great, too. A mix of Ghostly International electronics and Mogwai’s sonics, Errors have our attention. Let’s hope they make it stateside soon.

Errors – “Pump”

Also in the electronic vein is the release of The Whip’s debut, X Marks the Destination. Now, we have been waiting for this record to hit the US for a long time, since we first heard of them doing remixes for AEC faves Editors, Hadouken!, and… Sons and Daughters (three mentions for S&Ds in one missive! That must be a record). Now their debut is finally coming out and we got exactly what we wanted. The 4-piece deliver sharp electro dance rock like The Faint, White Rose Movement and the rest of them, and at its core is simply made for dancing: hard, fast and fashionable, of course.

The Whip – “Frustration (Van She Remix)”

Also in better-late-than never US release news, AEC darlings Late Of The Pier finally released their debut, Fantasy Black Channel via Astralwerks today [January 13] actually, (it came out in the UK last July).

Late of the Pier – “The Bears Are Coming”

And, finally, our most exciting new find is Zomby. Yes, Where Were You in ’92? is retro, and, in fact, it’s meant to be. The thing is, as much as this record is an homage to the rave/hardcore/garage choons of the early 90s, what sets Zomby apart from other less talented revivalists, is that the music is not only reminiscent of our early rave days, it embodies the sounds as well as the spirit. It’s not simply the cosmetics, but the true essence. Every time we put this one on, we smile. Meet our 2009 pre-party record of choice.

Zomby – “Where Were U in ‘92?” MixTape

And finally, we leave you with a NSFW link. One of our current favorite TV shows is BBC America’s “Skins.” We are one season behind here, but we just got wind of the new extended trailer for the 4th season, and, wow. As usual, the teen drama pushes boundaries, buttons and the legality of what can be seen on television. Thank God for “Skins.” American shows should take note. This is how you scare the parents:

In a posting on his MySpace blog, Moz announced today (January 5) that listeners can hear “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, which he describes as his “cosmopolitan hymn to architecture,” streaming from his MySpace player.

The single will be released on February 9, and — as previously reported — the album is due out February 17 in the US, and February 23 in the UK, with a full supporting tour to follow.

Morrissey will release Years of Refusal, his first studio album since 2006’s Ringleader of the Tormentors, this February, and he’s asked the good people at Lost Highway Records to handle the U.S. release.

It’s sort of a strange partnership, considering that Lost Highway is home to a bit more folksy group than Morrissey would typically be grouped in with: Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Elvis Costello and Ryan Adams, to name just a few. But the label will launch Years of Refusal on February 17, and Morrissey’s exhaustive month-and-a-half tour of the states will kick off about two weeks later.

The album was the last album to be produced by the late Jerry Finn, and features long-time Morrissey bandmates Boz Boorer, Jesse Tobias, Matt Walker and Solomon Walker, as well as a cameo by Jeff Beck on the song “Black Cloud.”

Pre-orders for Years of Refusal are on now, and select tour dates go on sale Friday through Ticketmaster.
