Guess what y’all? British tabloid the NME successfully turned an off-handed Jay-Z comment on Noel Gallagher into a headline. Sort of reminds me of that time Lindsay Lohan didn’t wear any undies, but even less eventful. Either way, you may remember a year or so ago when the fiesty Gallagher got his panties in a twist over Jay-Z, a so called rap star, headlining Britain’s annual Rain and Mud fest, ahum, the Glastonbury Music Festival. Gallagher, who is the dude from Oasis that’s really into the Beatles, was quoted as saying “I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.” Of course this means nothing to S Dot Carter, who, cool and calm as ever (Dude’s been listening to too much Grizzly Bear), shrugged off Gallagher’s playa hating with a simple, “I don’t have any problem, so I said anything is possible.” So there you have it folks, breaking news from the NME, Jay-Z doesn’t have a problem with Noel Gallagher, which isn’t a surprise, because, despite Black Album hit “99 Problems,” were pretty sure Jay-Z’s only problem is deciding which whip to cruise around in, the Maybach or the Bentley.

Maybe because he hadn’t gotten into a fist fight in a while, and it just seemed like the right thing to do, Pete Doherty has decided that Babyshambles needs to make a “comeback album” to show Oasis what’s up and take their place as Britain’s top band.

Doherty told NME.com that he was impressed by Oasis’ most recent album, Dig Out Your Soul — so impressed that he wants to one-up it and make an even better LP.

“With Oasis stepping up a gear and proving they’ve still got it, they need to be shown there are people out there who can surpass them,” Doherty said. “Can we match them? The quality is good [in Oasis], but there really is no competition because my band is the greatest in the world and we’re going to prove it.”

Of course, then when the chips were really on the table Doherty wasn’t so sure any more. NME asked him when we should all pencil in to our calendars to run out and buy this new album, and he seemed unsure. “It’s record company politics, ” he said. “Please, let it happen as soon as possible.”

Please, for all of us. Please.

A while back Pete Doherty made it known that The Libertines had been offered in upwards of £2 million to reunite for festival season, and bandmate Carl Barat pretty much immediately put the kabash on anything of the sort. But then the two seemed chummy at the NME Shockwave Awards, and now Pete “Publicity Machine” Doherty is back at it again, saying The Libertines reunion will definitely happen. What’s different now, Petey?

We’re going to have to wait to find out. In an interview with NME Radio, Doherty outlines his plan to get Carl and the rest of the gang back together. He also discusses his upcoming solo tour (and plans to bring along Graham Coxon) and his recent falling out with Wolfman.

On The Libertines reunion, Doherty told Neil Cole “it’s going to happen. It’s unfinished business, isn’t it?” You can listen to the full interview, airing tomorrow at noon GMT (7 a.m. EST) and again on Saturday.

We know Pitchfork has a penchant for partnering up with reputable people, and the fact they like to only credit a few sources. So with conspiracy theories abound we’re asking ourselves this morning, why would NME lie about Pitchfork’s top ten records of 2008?

As we reported earlier in the week, The Daily Swarm’s Todd Roberts called out NME for posting what he called a “dubious” representation of Pitchfork’s top ten list in their aggregated year-end “super list”. Though no sources were cited, we assumed he was correct since he risked his journalistic integrity to tell us the list was “reportedly false.”

Well sure enough, today Pitchfork revealed their list and low and behold, their perennial poster child Deerhunter is not at the top of the list (they went with the popular bearded choice of 2008. No, the other one). So instead of asking ourselves why many of the best of lists we’ve seen are so incredibly myopic. And despite the fact that after we read these lists we’re left wondering if Fucked Up put out the only punk record and Lil Wayne the only hip-hop record. Or if we have to start looking elsewhere to find truly independent criticism. We’re asking why NME? Why?

Since these two websites could use a traffic boost, we thought we would help perpetrate this rumor.

Last Friday, NME presented their year-end best-of results as well as a “super-list” — an aggregate of many of the internet’s critical best-of lists. Despite the fact that all of the best-of lists presented were painfully similar making an aggregate pretty much unnecessary and equally unexciting, one list did draw some attention.

Included in the story was a run-down of Pitchfork’s top 10 records of the year (listed as their number one was “Best New Music” posterboy of the last two years, Deerhunter for Microcastle), but a quick peek at their site this week would tell you that their top 10 records of the year won’t be unveiled until this coming Friday the 19th. So is NME’s list for real?

Not according to The Daily Swarm’s Todd Roberts, who posted yesterday that the list is “reportedly false”. With no further information to go on, we’re left to wait until Friday. Or help push along the rumor until someone cracks.
