Make all the Williamsburg hipster jokes you want, but there have been few sweeter deals in recent memory than the Jelly Pool Parties. They’ve resided in parks within Brooklyn’s music mecca for a half-decade now, but are in jeopardy at the moment because the New York State Parks Department and the Open Space Alliance says their current home at the East River State Park may not be available next summer.

Among others, U.S. Senator (and BK native) Charles Schumer is fighting to keep the concert series alive. So maybe leave out the details about all the stuff you were hopped up on when you saw Girl Talk, but tell him how the Dirty Projectors show changed your life. Their backyard adventure for last year’s “Eraser” was by far one of our favorite clips of 2008 and now, this take on “Losing Feeling” blows our our hair back just as forcefully. What starts as a stop-motion tale of two mice morphs into something entirely different. Well, not really. Buckle up and wait for the 2:30 mark! Black Francis and Co. are embarking on a nine-city U.S. jaunt (right after their European dates that kick off the Doolittle Tour) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their classic album Doolittle, and apparently thought it would be a worthwhile notion to spread the celebration around. No Age’s enthusiasm for all things we get enthusiastic about makes for a pretty nice band-listener relationship. In addition to an EP that should continue to amplify the bonding sessions that are their live shows, Dean Spunt and Randy Randall have taken a step closer, pasting their brains together with skateboarding landmark and Emerica Pro Ed Templeton to design a vegan (as they are) skate shoe tough enough to endure the sport’s many stressors. It’s crafted of entirely of organic and synthetic fibers and, as you can see above, is far more pleasant to look at than the “admittedly somewhat garish” Nikes the band’s label, Sub Pop, released with that shoe corporation earlier this year.

This may be a cornball thing to say, but it’s always freeing to see a good idea realized. LA punk collagists No Age performed their film score for 1989’s The Bear over the weekend at LA’s Cinefamily theater. Randy and Dean also took a few minutes to answer some questions about the project and event, joking that they settled on “jamming”The Bear only because Mile and Otisis racist. If you’re reading this post you probably like music, art, film and comedy, or at the very least some combination of the four. If so, ATP New York probably has something for you and, it’s only a few weekends away. Just for starters: Jim Jarmusch presenting his film Mystery Train, a David Cross curated comedy section, an Eric White art exhibit, Sufjan, and No Age and Bob Mould performing Husker Du… the list goes on and on.

ATP takes place the weekend of September 11 at Kutsher’s Country Resort in Catskills, New York. Three-day or one-day passes are available as are buses from Brooklyn and Manhattan to the stomping grounds.And there’s no corporate sponsorships in these parts, so while this does seemingly lessen your chance of getting a free energy drink upon arrival, it way ups your chance of not selling out and whatnot. The fourth annual Fun Fun Fun Fest will hit Austin, Texas’ Waterloo Park for two days packed with music on November 7 and 8. The full lineup for the 2009 festival was just announced, and includes Ratatat, Of Montreal, Crystal Castles, Les Savy Fav, Yeasayer, Mission of Burma, Broadcast, Atlas Sound, No Age, Shonen Knife, Fuck Buttons, Times New Viking, Crystal Antlers, Jesus Lizard, Kid Sister, HEALTH, Neon Indian, and Alaska in Winter, among many others. Tickets go on sale today on the Fun Fest’s website, with early bird tickets going for $67.50 and early bird pip tickets selling for $135. Freshly sharpened pencils, lumpy apple slices and All Tomorrow’s Parties: it must be back-to-school time! Located in upstate New York at a country club with a capacity of only 2,800, this music festival sounds exactly like the liberal arts colleges I would have sacrificed myself at age 17 to attend. But instead of semesters of boredom and years of loans, this is just one big orgiastic weekend, September 11-13, partially curated by free love-enthusiasts The Flaming Lips.

The Sunday lineup, hand-selected and headlined by the Lips, includes Super Furry Animals, Boredoms, Crystal Castles, Deerhoof with Martha Colburn, and best of all, No Age performing Hüsker Dü with Bob Mould. I’m seeing colors right now. Check out the full line-up here.

In related Flaming Lips news, a new digital EP, titled “Songs from The Future Album Embryonic” is available to ATP ticket purchasers for free, and at basement bargain price for the rest of us. The three-song sampler should get you salivating for their first studio full-length in three years, coming out this fall… It’s about damn time.

As we’ve already reported, No Age has a new EP coming out on October 6th. But if you are antsy and eager to hear some music before then, Sub Pop has the entire EP, entitled Losing Feeling available for your listening pleasure now. In order to stream these tunes you’re gonna need to give up your email, but what you can also do is pre-order the EP which will be available only digitally and on vinyl. For those über No Age fans out there, make sure you catch the live performance of their score for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s 1989 film The Bear at the New Museum in NYC on October 16.

FYF (formerly Fuck Yeah Fest) is back and taking place at the Los Angeles Historic State Park in Downtown LA on Saturday, September 5th, 2009. Tickets are going for $20 a pop and are on sale now. FYF will also be donating $1 of every ticket to two organizations, Homeboy Industries and Harvest of Hope.

This year, the event is attached to an urgent awareness regarding the California State Park System where the governer recently decided to cut $14.2 million in funding, bringing over 100 California State Parks to the brink of closure. Noise rock fans, rejoice! Los Angeles’ No Age plan to release a new EP on October 6 via Sub Pop, the first new material from the group since 2008’s Nouns. The EP will be released on 12″ vinyl and digitally, but there are no plans to release it on CD. Perhaps this signals the end of the medium?

That extraordinarily long mess of letters in the headline is either the birth of a breathtaking new word whose meaning and definition will be determined at later date, OR it’s just a metaphor for what your brain’s going to look and feel like should you catch three of indie rock’s marquee names on stage together simultaneously this summer.

Dates for No Age, Deerhunter and Dan Deacon’s collab-o-rama were just announced by Pitchfork today, the site also reporting that all three will actually be playing together at once, to help flesh each other’s song out further. So, not the “round robin” originally reported but something much, much more interesting.

I usually hate how people will commend bands for making their sound poppier and more accessible, which is exactly the case for the new Health single “Die Slow”. Only problem is, I can’t stop listening to this song.

Released as a 7-inch on Lovepump United in advance of their upcoming full-length Get Color, the “Die Slow” single (the B-Side comes with a Pictureplane remix of the song) would suggest Health have been taking cues from their partners in “Crimewave”, Crystal Castles. Moving further away from their avant noise days than ever before, it seems as though the band will be looking to break out of the underground, much the way fellow L.A. sonic stranglers No Age have been able to do. Making their claim to one of the best records we’ve yet to hear, here is at least one of the best singles of 2009.

Health – “Die Slow” [via 88 Days In My Veins]

Ok, this is less of an exclusive (I think we got it up first), and more about me begging to post a track from Nisennenmondai’s upcoming long player (although only 5 songs, it’s 44 minutes) Destination Tokyo. Well, my persistence payed dividends, because today we can share with you the title track. This is the best thing I’ve heard all week.

I’ve been following this three-piece, all-girl Japanese noise-pop group since first witnessing them at CMJ 4 years ago. Yet, due to language barriers and the fact they live half way around the world, communication — let alone getting the chance to see them perform again — has been nearly impossible. So when it was announced that their records would be made available for worldwide consumption by the venerable Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound, I was filled with a pleasant satisfaction. At least I would get easy access to their music.

Legendary tales of them playing shows in Japan with the likes of Hella, Lightning Bolt, Battles and No Age have built their credo to near-legendary status. Prefuse 73 has been talking about them for years as well, quoted in Dazed & Confused as saying, “John Stanier from Battles had told me they were sick. . . They started to play and the drummer was as big as my hand. She started to play 16th notes on her hi-hat for about 15 minutes. Next thing you know, these three tiny diminutive women were making us look like idiots because they were so incredible.”

Consisting of Sayaka Himeno (drums), Yuri Zaikawa (bass) and Masako Takada (guitar), Destination Tokyo will be their second official release outside of Japan — their fist being a combination of their Neji andTori EPs on one disc. And while glimpses of their frenetic, post-punk past can still be heard, Destination Tokyo sounds more clean, and more minimal and repetitive than the EP collection. As the press release would like to boast, it “could be described as a mix of the groovy krautrock of Neu! and New York 1980’s no wave/disco created by bands such as Sonic Youth, DNA, and ESG, infused with elements of the instrumental Black Flag of The Process Of Weeding Out and the avant/post-punk of This Heat.”

Destination Tokyo will be released worldwide on August 11, 2009.

Nisennenmondai – “Destination Tokyo”

Three bands. One stage. No, it’s not another festival line-up announcement. It’s the second coming of the round robin, and this time Dan Deacon’s bringing his whole band and playing alongside No Age and Deerhunter.

The round robin concept has all three bands set up on stage at once, alternating songs, just as Deacon did this past fall. It’ll all be going down this summer. According to Pitchfork, no dates or venues announced yet, just epic, pants-wetting excitement. Brace yourselves for the full details coming in the next few weeks. In the meantime, you can follow Dan Deacon’s current tour via his blog on Impose.

It has been 10 years since Explosions in the Sky formed at a local Austin, Texas pizza place and started playing together. Now, in celebration of their anniversary the band has decided to play four shows with some very special guests this summer.

The shows will be hosted in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and the band’s hometown of Austin, and the band has announced they will be joined by No Age, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, The Octopus Project, Eluvium, Constantines, and The Wooden Birds for the anniversary shows. Along with the four celebratory showcases, Explosions In The Sky will also be playing as special guests of Broken Social Scene in July in Toronto.

Before Dean Spunt and Randy Randall were No Age, they were part of the LA punk band WIVES. And since seemingly everyday there is new talk of seminal bands reuniting to make some extra cash… er, I mean, answer the call of their fans, we’d like to suggest the reformation of the band that made this one-minute and thirty-five second gem.

Originally released on Cold Sweat Records, the song “Babies” was from the bands 1995 debut — and only full length release, Erect the Youth Problem. A definitive sign of things to come, Wives was a rock band channeling post-punk (as opposed to a post-punk band channeling arena rock a la No Age) with a Sprunt’s vocals (who back then went by Dean Allen Spunt) consisting of his signature screams and course shouts as he tries to keep up with the high speed of the music. Back then when people would describe Wives, they would get comparisons to other Cali melodic screamers like Blood Brothers and Daughters. Now they would just be compared to the preeminent LA post punk band No Age.
