Closure is generally a good thing. After John Cusack achieved it in “High Fidelity” he ended up getting back together with his insanely cute girlfriend and starting a record label. We’re pretty sure the dudes from Oasis already have cute girlfriends, or wives or whatever. And that there’s about a million rich dudes in London that would give them a record label no questions asked. But all the same, we hope something in a similarly positive vein comes their way.

After news at the end of summer that Noel had left the band, things weren’t looking up for the Gallagher Brothers. But now, Liam has officially confirmed the inevitable. “Well, Oasis is no longer,” Liam told the London Times. “I think we all know that. So that’s done.” Little more was said of it besides notign they had a good run and that his mind ha salready moved on to his next musical project, whatever that will be. Nice to see he’s got a positive outlook on the whole thing, and not, you know, looking back in anger.
Add Sex Pistols singer John Lydon to the list of those mourning the demise of Oasis; the musician has reportedly revealed that he was “sad” to hear that the band had split. Female First quotes Lydon as saying, “It is sad. They’re a nice backdrop band on a dull day. There’s no content or depth to Oasis but it’s still poignant.” He added, “Noel is fantastic, one of Britain’s finest,” but suggested that Liam had aped his vocal style: “Liam’s alright if you want a second-rate Rotten. I remember hearing ‘Rock N Roll Star’ for the first time and it sounded like John Lennon and John Lydon mixed together.”

Damning praise, for sure.

After Oasis canceled their set at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris late Friday night, Noel Gallagher announced via their website that he has officially called it a day. “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” Gallagher wrote. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” The band was scheduled to play more European festival dates over the weekend, performances at Rock am See in Germany as well as I-Day Festival in Milan also canceled as a result of the rift.

In other, more widely circulated news, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein was found dead in his New York apartment late Friday night, after what NYPD officials have suggested was a crack cocaine overdose. A crack pike, prescription pills and a “half bag of crack cocaine” were found in Goldstein’s apartment. Below is video of Goldstein mashing Oasis and MIA while performing at last year’s Lollapalooza festival.

After years and years of trying to convince the world that they were better than not only the Beatles but anyone whose ever even looked at or thought about a musical instrument, Oasis has enlisted the Hairy Fairy, aka Devendra Banhart, to remix the next single from the band’s new album Dig Out Your Soul. He chose jug band burner “Get Off Your High Horse Lady,” which you have to register at the Oasis community to actually hear. We did that and still couldn’t, so we’re going to just repost what the Oasis fans had to say about it on the message board…

bharper
Haha its quite good!

vashuclash
weird and equally piontless

snazzmaster
doesnt work for me

bergkamp2004
doesnt play

brightmeister
bad song to remix tbh, not bad tho, still as awful as the original song

dudacough
not workin for me

MasterNova
I prefer album version. Of course with it’s Indian theme, it feels very Jamaican to me. Anyone else? That strumming acoustic in the background really sets a tone different than the other ‘Techno’ bits that are usually inter-laced in remixes.

- All in all this sounds like a completely different song, which I gather it is supposed to. A little low key and monotoninous for me though. Also, I guess due to popularity of it right now, can’t access whole version and it is pretty laggy.

.Rubber.Soul.
Why remix this song?

It would be like painting a turd purple. Pointless and stinky.

shakermakerman
its crap

speller
it doesnt work

dudacough
ok it’s working now for me.

rather cool actually. Nice twist to it.
Still prefer the album version, but it’s still a good remix.

bigbri1973
it’s ok, very chilled.

fatbobslim
Not playing for me either… grrr.

soldier~on
Cool but i still like the album version better

Register here to join in on the fun!

Noel Gallagher has been blogging on the Oasis MySpace regularly while on their recent tour to South America, which, according to the notoriously grumpy guitar player, has been so good, he’s “nearly wrote five new songs on this leg alone.”

Just Wednesday, Gallagher was talking about waking up late and complaining about the weather and shows;

What a mad day! I just woke up at 11:45. A.M.! That in itself is mental. I haven’t slept that long since 1998 – Paris, I think it was.

It’s FUCKIN’ PISSING DOWN WITH RAIN and it’s pitch black – maybe not black, but very, very grey.

Curitiba was great. The gig was anyway. Dunno what we’re trying to prove by playing places like that, and here in Porto Alegre for that matter. Why not just do 2 big, fuck off gigs in Rio and Sao Paolo??

But Thursday saw him changing his tune, claiming that the show they ended up playing that Wednesday evening was so good, he “would have loved to have stayed and re-lived the 90s but the writing bug has gripped me. Nearly wrote 5 new songs on this leg alone! Gotta get them down while it’s still happening.”

He went on to say the gig was “Amazing. Amazing. Amazing.” Before leaving a personal note for the people of South America.

I speak directly to you people of South America. You have been truly amazing. It’s been a privilege to play for you. The memories of this little tour will live with me for a long time. Mucho gracias and obrigado.

Maybe because he hadn’t gotten into a fist fight in a while, and it just seemed like the right thing to do, Pete Doherty has decided that Babyshambles needs to make a “comeback album” to show Oasis what’s up and take their place as Britain’s top band.

Doherty told NME.com that he was impressed by Oasis’ most recent album, Dig Out Your Soul — so impressed that he wants to one-up it and make an even better LP.

“With Oasis stepping up a gear and proving they’ve still got it, they need to be shown there are people out there who can surpass them,” Doherty said. “Can we match them? The quality is good [in Oasis], but there really is no competition because my band is the greatest in the world and we’re going to prove it.”

Of course, then when the chips were really on the table Doherty wasn’t so sure any more. NME asked him when we should all pencil in to our calendars to run out and buy this new album, and he seemed unsure. “It’s record company politics, ” he said. “Please, let it happen as soon as possible.”

Please, for all of us. Please.

One half of our favorite British brother duo Oasis, has pulled his hands away from his guitar strings for a little while and is giving the fashion industry a go. Liam Gallagher is now the proud owner of his very own fashion label, Pretty Green, which is set to launch next month.

Adding fashion designer onto his plate was probably one of the last things we expected from the British songwriter, but in his own words — or at least what we think he said in his promo video for Pretty Green — “it is time to be classy, and that’s why I don’t wear Uggs anymore.” (We’re a little apprehensive to put our fashion sense in the hands a man who used to wear Uggs). Uggs aside, Gallagher’s plan for his new men’s line seem rather promising, but for those of you who enjoy tight pants you might be disappointed, Liam’s not a fan of the ’skinny’ look. Instead his line will consist of everything he would wear, and if you don’t like it, he doesn’t care, because at least he’ll “get a wardrobe out of it.” That classic Oasis attitude will never get old, will it?

You can watch the promo video here, and you can take your hand at winning a Pretty Green t-shirt here.

The Pablove Foundation is named after Pablo Castelaz, the five-year-old son of Dangerbird Records co-founder Jeff Castelaz and his wife Jo Ann Thrailkill, who suffers from a bilateral Wilms’ Tumor, a rare form of children’s cancer.

In addition to the performances, there will be some swag for purchase to raise more money for the foundation, including a limited edition t-shirt and the two-disc benefit compilation Give. Listen. Help. Volume 5, featuring Radiohead, Bloc Party, Oasis and the Dangerbird Records roster. Each CD purchase will be accompanied with a free poster, crafted specifically in honor of the evening.

Tickets go on sale tonight at 7 p.m. for $25 via TicketWeb. Purchase will be limited to two tickets per customer and are only available through online purchase, with a scheduled will-call pick-up.

Here’s some more background on The Pablove Foundation:

On May 17, 2008, Pablo was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms’ Tumor, a rare form of children’s cancer, and has been receiving treatment at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

The Pablove Foundation supports cancer research and cancer patient play activities, music and arts programs. Recently, The Pablove Foundation funded a year of evening and weekend hours in the play room on the fourth floor soft tumor units at CHLA. These ‘units’ are actually an entire floor of the hospital, which is filled with brave, beautiful children at any time of the year. This play room brings immeasurable joy to the heart of a child whose life has been turned upside down in the face of a life-threatening disease and whose world has temporarily been reduced to a small hospital room.

The Pablove Foundation also plans to contribute to cancer research and treatment at CHLA, including the efforts of CHLA’s Saban Research Institute, one of the top cancer research facilities in the United States.

Sigh. This is what it’s come to? It’s one thing for Rolling Stone to drop a quote in an interview with Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips dissing Win Butler and The Arcade Fire for being pompous (doesn’t seem that hard to believe, does it?). But for them to run a headline in their “Smoking Section” that blasts, “Exclusive: Wayne Coyne Tears Apart Arcade Fire!” is quite another. Now the music-world is abuzz with the two iconic front men exchanging verbal blows through the media.

We have our own opinions of both (see the headline), but that’s a whole other story, because yesterday Rolling Stone posted a quote from Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips accusing the Arcade Fire of being dicks in real life. In fact, the entire quote looks like this:

I’m a fan of them on one level, but on another level I get really tired of their pompousness. We’ve played some shows with them and they really treat people like shit. Whenever I’ve been around them, I’ve found that they not only treated their crew like shit, they treated the audience like shit. They treated everybody in their vicinity like shit. I thought, ‘Who do they think they are?’ I don’t know why people put up with it. I wouldn’t put up with it. I don’t care if it’s Arcade Fire or Brian Eno. If either of them walked into a room and treated people like shit I’d be like, ‘Fuck you, get outta here.’

People treat Arcade Fire like they’re the greatest thing ever and they get away with it. Those sort of opinions change my view of their music. They have good tunes, but they’re pricks, so fuck ‘em. Who does Arcade Fire think they are? I’ve been around groups. I’ve been around the Edge from U2 and he’s the fucking sweetest guy ever. I was around Justin Timberlake when he was young and he was just a normal, nice, kind person. Anyone can be polite and kind and people who have the privilege and money and attention should understand that. If they don’t, then fuck ‘em.

Again, we can only speculate, but considering we’ve rarely seen the Arcade Fire smile, it doesn’t seem impossible to believe that they are not the most friendly of people. Still, it is rather unbecoming of Coyne to openly bash another band in one of the larger music publications of the world.

But don’t fret effeminate Arcade Fire fans, your leading man is not taking Mr. Coyne’s statements laying down. Today, Win Butler struck back by blogging (gasp!) about the incident on the Arcade Fire website (click on “Win”). If words could hurt, just imagine the pain Wayne would be feeling after getting verbally smacked up like this:

Wow, I can’t believe I am actually writing to defend my bands “real” personality. I wish I could not respond to something like this, but the reality is is that people will be asking me questions about it for the next 5 years. I also fear that people will base their opinion of our band on the media quotes of a guy who doesn’t even know us.

The only time we have ever shared a stage with the Flaming Lips was our last show on the Funeral tour at a festival in Las Vegas (over 3 years ago)…we arrived the morning of the show from Brazil, slept all day and awoke into some kind of surreal Vegas jet-lag dream in which we were playing after the Flaming Lips…how strange…I was really excited to meet Wayne. Clouds Taste Metallic was a huge record for me, and growing up in the weirdness of Houston, I always imagined Oklahoma City to be in the same universe. I was really nervous to meet him and I felt a little weird that we were playing after them. We traded a little hello, but he was a hard guy to get a read on. Steven Drodz was super nice, and I felt good after talking to him…

So…I am not sure Wayne is the best judge (based on seeing us play at a couple of festivals) if we are righteous, kind and goodhearted people like The Edge and Justin Timberlake (who I am sure he knows intimately as well). I can’t imagine a reason why we would have been pompous towards The Flaming Lips, a band we have always loved, on that particular night, all those years ago. Unless I was way more jet-lagged then I remember, I hope I was less of a “prick” then telling Rollingstone that a bunch of people I don’t know at all are really assholes.

As a closing note, the main point that I am offended by in this whole thing is for Wayne to say we treat our audience like shit…

At times like these I am comforted by knowing that even though Wayne slammed Beck all those years ago, he seems like a really nice guy to me. I guess everyone has a different idea of what being pompous means.

Win

So there you have it. Two grown men who each made about one great record apiece fighting through the media. If Oasis, Blur and hip-hop have taught us anything, this will keep both in the spotlight despite the ratio of good music coming out of either. So we figured, why take the high road? Might as well stoop to each of their levels and just make fun of them both. Congrats Mr. Coyne and Mr. Butler, we’ll be looking forward to the inevitable big festival you guys play together and waiting with bated breath to see if you guys slap it out like real “indie” rockers. Now THAT would be news!

Liam and Noel Gallagher are never shy about stirring up some sort of controversy, and of course it looks like the dueling brothers of Oasis have done it again. Only this time it seems like they’ve pissed off the largest country in the world.

According to a statement released by Oasis, the band has links with the <a href="http://www.freetibet.org/"target="new">Free Tibet campaign, which has caused the band to loose their performance licenses in China. Noel Gallagher appeared at a “Free Tibet” benefit concert back in 1997, and now after scheduling their first concert dates in the country, the Chinese government has deemed the band “unsuitable” to perform there. Ticket sales have been halted, refunds have been given back to fans, and the April dates Oasis were scheduled to play have been canceled.

The band said in the statement that they are, “extremely disappointed that they are now being prevented from undertaking their planned tour of mainland China and hope that the powers that be within China will reconsider their decision and allow the band to perform to their Chinese fans at some stage in the future.”

The rest of Oasis’ South East Asian leg of the tour will go on as planned, including their April 7 date in Hong Kong. The Free Tibet Campaign is based out of London, England and campaigns for the rights of the Tibetan people to determine their own government, and to free Tibet from the occupation of China on their land. In the past bands like Radiohead, Beastie Boys, and Rage Against the Machine have all played at the benefit concerts for Tibet.

But, honestly — can you expect any less from a program that sends its winners home with a giant bronzed middle finger?

The award categories in last night’s ceremony ranged from the standard stuff (Best International Band went to The Killers, while Best British Band went to Oasis) to the slightly more whimsical (the award for Godlike Genius went to Robert Smith and The Cure) to the completely out of place (Villain of the year for the sixth year running was George W. Bush, with Hero of the Year going to President Barack Obama, because apparently even the British would’ve Baracked the vote, had they been allowed the opportunity).

But in between giving out top honors for wardrobe choices, both best (Alexa Chung) and worst (Amy Winehouse), there were some notable happenings. The most notable, of course, was the on-stage reunion of Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon. Their first time playing together in nearly a decade, they performed a stripped-down version of “This Is a Low.” Albarn said the preparations for the impending Blur reunion are going well, and that they’re “taking it really easy …. just doing it once a week and enjoying it — playing every album, every song.”

But they weren’t the only ones talking reunions — not shockingly, Pete Doherty still has dollar signs (or probably pound signs, really) floating in front of his eyes and is determined to cash in on a Libertines reunion. Doherty took home the award for Best Solo Artist last night, and told NME that he will convince Carl Barat to get the band back together. The two did a joint interview in which Barat didn’t seem as adamant as he was before that a reunion was out of the question. Doherty said he would twist his arm. Literally.

It was also a big night for The Cure, with the band taking home the award for Godlike Genius (presented by Tim Burton, for no other discernable reason than that he looks eerily like Robert Smith), and Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh declaring his desire to have Robert Smith play his uncle in the upcoming Mighty Boosh film. The show won the award for Best TV Show.

And then there was Dizzie Rascal, who proved you can actually be completely unaware you were nominated for an award and still take one home.

Finally, it must be said: any award show that a.) has categories for the worst band and worst album of the year and b.) gives both of those awards to The Jonas Brothers, is a-okay in our book.

While we’re a little curious as to how “Born In the U.S.A.” will pan out over on the other side of the pond, the sold out music festival — which will take place on June 26-28 — and the its organizers are very excited to have Springsteen grace their stage. “I’m so pleased that Bruce Springsteen has agreed to come to Worthy Farm for the first time,” said festival chief Michael Eavis. “He’s one of the all-time rock legends and I’m confident that this will be one of our best shows ever.”

Just last week, Emily Eavis, who helps run the festival, dismissed rumors that The Rolling Stones and U2 would be headlining the festival, but said “I’m knocked out that we’ve managed to get Bruce to play. It’s the icing on the cake of this year’s bill, which I’m sure will take everyone’s breath away when we announce the full details.”

So far, only a hand full of acts along with Bruce have been confirmed for the festival, including Bon Iver, Lilly Allen, and Franz Ferdinand. Among other artists rumored to play are Neil Young,Blur, Coldplay, and Oasis.

With no rhyme or reason, our editorial staff chooses the top 10 biggest music-related news stories of 2008. Coming in at #3: Oasis‘ Noel Gallagher is assaulted on stage in Toronto.
A lot of people might have considered decking Noel Gallagher over the years, but one Daniel Sulllivan actually took it upon himself to do it. While performing “Morning Glory” at Toronto’s 2008 Virgin Festival, Sullivan suddenly appeared on stage and, without warning, pushed the unsuspecting guitarist to the floor causing a halt in the performance for several minutes. Once nerves and microphones were restored, the band resumed performing with “The Importance of Being Idle”, but the band went on to cancel the remainder of their North American stops.

See the rest of the story and video of the incident here.
