Swedish indie-pop duos may not scream street cred, but then again Kanye West has turned a lot of non-traditional concepts into everyday parts of the hip-hop blogosphere (See: Mr. Hudson, uncomfortable looking chairs.) Not so long ago, it was West’s blog that debuted PB and J’s single “Nothing To Worry About.” And if we measure Ye’s excitement on a scale direcetly linked to his Caps-lock usage, he certainly liked what he heard. Then the duo were sampled on the biggest mixtape of the past year when Drake included “Let’s Call It Off” on So Far Gone. And now Mick Boogie has curated a mixtape entitled Re-Living Thing reworking all of their recent album Living Thing with the help of a legitimately interesting mix of old and new school rappers (Wale, Gza, Bun B, Fashawn) and producers (DJ Jazzy Jeff, Cookin’ Soul, Apple Juice Kid, The Kickdrums). The music molds the genres together oddly well, making the association seem almost natural. So odds tell us Jay-Z should eb attending their next Brooklyn concert, schedule permitting. Check out Re-Living Thing here. Words and photos by Sarahana

Sweden’s pop trio Peter Bjorn and John are celebrating their 10 years of band existence this year, and the mention of this led to a festive cheer at a sold out Music Hall of Williamsburg last night. Walking out onto the dark stage in hoola hoops, when these had no further use, the band’s one-third namesake and front man, Peter, offered plenty of jumping and dancing throughout the night.
[Chairlift]

Brooklyn’s Chairlift played an opening set. Other than their iPod commercial hit, “Bruises”, they played a pretty tranquil collection of songs. This, with the combination of Aaron Pfenning’s low voice and singer Caroline Polachek’s frequent outbursts, made it sound as if the band was making out with everything in existence.

He’s a teacher by day and Karl Malone’s cousin, that in itself should merit a listen to Kenan Bell. But the La Crescenta, CA hip-hop artist has recently dropped his “remix collective project” –- entitled Good News: The Mix-Tape — and with remixes of songs by artists as wide-ranging as Pink Floyd, Lily Allen, Gang Gang Dance, Jose Gonzalez, Peter, Bjorn & John, Duran Duran and Neil Diamond, how couldn’t you want to listen?

Backed by a full indie-band, the idea was originally conceived when a Smiths remix Kenan did for fun managed to find its way onto a Morrissey fan site, and then to Morrissey himself. For his part, Bell says, “I wanted to rap over The Smiths because people said it couldn’t be done.” For Good News, Bell and his production team reworked songs of Bell’s choosing: gathering the songs, pulling samples and writing the lyrics all in a matter of a few days — some of the songs written and tracked on the spot, in one take.

The Tripwire has the exclusive drop Bell’s version of Jose Gonzalez’ “Crosses”, and if you like it, you can check also out his Peter, Bjorn and John remix, his Lily Allen remix and his Gang Gang Dance remix.

It’s no secret we’re fans of Women; aside from the On The Cover feature we ran last November, we surmised that that their self-titled debut was the 6th best record of 2008.
Having played right before Tinted Windows, it created an odd paradigm — one that wasn’t lost on the sound guy apparently. But Women did stick around long enough to see Devo, Peter Bjorn and John and for us to talk to them via flipcam while they were loading out.

In 2007, Brooklyn’s Au Revoir Simone seemed to be everywhere. The trio of Heather D’Angelo, Erika Forster and Annie Hart had just put out The Bird Of Music to wide critical acclaim, D’Angelo guested on the also critically acclaimed Boggs album Forts and they found themselves playing shows with the likes of Air and Peter, Bjorn and John. But aside from a remix album, the trio has been relatively quiet on the recording side of things — until now.

Produced by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Little Joy), and recorded in various studios between Brooklyn, NY, and Los Angeles, CA, the result is their third album, entitled Still Night, Still Light, released on their own label, Our Secret Record Company on May 19. Au Revoir Simone will be playing this year’s SXSW, with a Still Night, Still Light supporting tour throughout America to follow this spring.

From the press release: Although featuring songs written by all three ladies, the album has a tremendous thematic cohesion, as if composed by a singular voice. The collection of twelve songs sees our three keyboard-wielding heroines creating something that could only be called “elemental”. Gone are the bells and whistles of The Bird of Music, and in their place is a stark closeness, as if hearing a secret from someone you love for the first time. It’s a record that details reflection, seeking, questioning and losing one’s place on the page while looking for the right way home. It has some of the band’s most quiet moments (see the glacial grace of “The Last One”) while also containing some of their most raucous (see the dizzying exuberance of “Anywhere You Looked”). Indeed, Still Night, Still Light is the band at their most exposed, relying mainly on their keyboards, drum machine, and effortless voices to create a folk record without folk instruments, humming with resilience and wonder.

Still Night, Still Light track listing
01. Another Likely Story
02. Shadows
03. All or Nothing
04. Knight of Wands
05. The Last One
06. Trace a Line
07. Only You Can Make You Happy
08. Take Me as I Am
09. Anywhere You Looked
10. Organized Scenery
11. We Are Here
12. Tell Me

Following up on their industry-acclaimed EP Chunk of Change, Passion Pit is releasing their first full-length album, Manners, this upcoming May.
While reports have been semi-conflicting (e-mails out of Gigantic Studios where they recorded Manners have mentioned Columbia Records as the home of the release, and press agents at the Columbia U.S. offices have been name dropping their recent signing) Manners is apparently due out on Frenchkiss in the U.S. on May 26, and the UK release will be eight days prior on Columbia Records proper, May 18. Along with the new album, the Massachusetts band is going to be touring like crazy in both North America and Europe, with the inevitable stint at SxSW.
