We made that name that up. Just after a 6.0-magnitude aftershock ripped through Haiti this morning, MTV announced that it will hold a telethon for the beleaguered nation, to be aired this Friday, January 22, at 8 PM on all of the major television networks. The telethon will feature a performance by the impromptu supergroup of Jay-Z, U2’s Bono and the Edge, and Rihanna. Jay-Z and the U2 crew have also recorded a song with producer Swiss Beatz that will be made available on iTunes, with all proceeds going towards relief efforts in Haiti.
“Bono came up with the phrase on the phone, and last night we were here, we wrote a song — finished, recorded, and sent it back to [Swizz Beatz],” the Edge said on Irish radio. “So that might be the next thing you hear from us.”
The benefit, billed as “Hope for Haiti,” will be hosted by Wyclef Jean, George Clooney, and Anderson Cooper, and will feature performances by Justin Timberlake, Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Alicia Keys, and Taylor Swift, amongst many others. All of the performances will be recorded and sold on iTunes starting on Saturday for 99 cents each, with proceeds benefiting Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF, Wyclef’s Yele Haiti Foundation, the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, and the UN World Food Program.
