The Wire Goes Ivy League

TheWire

Why do all the expensive schools get the cool classes? First, NYU unveils their Guitar Hero seminar and now Harvard professor William J. Wilson has announced he will be basing a sociology course around the acclaimed HBO series The Wire. Wilson made the announcement at a campus panel discussion that included series stars like Omar and Bubbles (yes, they have real names, but maybe they should have thought about that before they played a character named Bubbles so well). Paste points out this is not the only Wire-based class, but it appears to be the only one that focuses most of its scholarly energy on the social science aspects, of which Wilson is particularly complimentary. “It has done more to enhance our understanding of the challenges of urban life and the problems of urban inequality, more than any other media event or scholarly publication,” he said at the panel discussion. At least the mid-term should basically write itself. Question 1: “Where Wallace at?” (Sigh). Question 2: What is the game? (The game is the game). (Via: Paste)
