Have you seen Spoon live? They’re crisp, like say, a delicious pastry. They are absolutely not one of those bands who anyone could ever accuse of “studio magic” because their sets beautifully recreate these little jams they have come close to perfecting over the last decade of making indie rock. Well, they’re doing it all over again with Transference this January 26, and surrounding that release date with some live shows. One date is even with Jay Reatard, which is sort of like an experiment on what happens when organized sound meets sonic chaos. So we think everyone wins.

On three summer eves,
as music permeates heat,
Spoon comes home again.

Barely a week after Spoon sprung their quick new Got Nuffin’ EP on our unsuspecting ears, the quartet now turns their energetic drive towards efforts of festival promoting with SPOONX3, a consecutive trilogy of hot nights that find the band nuzzling themselves amongst a number of handpicked artists (Black Joe Lewis!), in an effort to showcase not only some new material from their forthcoming album, but also how serious this city is about its namesake (however self-christened it may be).

The venue? Austin (the land of music festivals) and its large-yet-oddly-intimate Stubb’s Amphitheater which somewhat recently (SXSW) had the pleasure of playing part in what was probably the smallest Metallica show since 1982. The bill? Every spectrum of the musical landscape including Quasi, Dale Watson and the Strange Boys.

Tickets look to be right at $28 per night and are still available. Check the lineup though, all three nights look to be worth it, (Spoon’s playing every night).

Spoon got sneaky and announced their Got Nuffin’ EP just a week before it’s release. That just so happens to be today. In keeping with our newfound commitment to poetic brevity, we’ve got an extra-special Haiku Review today from a Tripwire contributor in Spoon’s hometown of Austin, Kyle Rother. Close your eyes and breathe easy, people.

And thus it might seem
that if Spoon has Got Nuffin
then I’m in the red.

The line up for the five-day-long Merge Records 20th Anniversary Celebration has been announced, and the event to bound to be nothing but stellar with headliners like label-founders Superchunk topping the bill.

The festival — XXMerge as they’ve dubbed it — is set to take place on July 22 through the 26, in Carrboro, N.C. at the Cat’s Cradle and one night at UNC. Along with the previously mentioned headliners, M. Ward, Spoon, Conor Oberst, The Rosebuds, Destroyer, Guv’ner, Polvo, Pipe and The Broken West, are all scheduled to perform at the event. More bands will be added to the line up at a later date, and we’re hoping we’ll get to see the Arcade Fire or Camera Obscura add their musical stylings to the already stacked line up.

Nothing can induce a potent combination of nostalgia and rage like the time-honored top 100 list. All the major music magazines have come out with at least one or two, and Rolling Stone has about a one-per-month quota. But this latest one comes from a slightly unlikely source — Amazon. Apparently they don’t just sell you music. They might actually know a little something about it, too. Maybe.

The Amazon list came equipped with a read-this-before-you-write-a-strongly-worded-letter clause, listing all the requirements and stipulations the Amazon music editors placed on albums worthy of the list.

The term “Indie Rock” is undeniably tricky. We challenge anyone to definitively define what is and what is not indie rock–you will fail. For the purposes of compiling this list we’ve decided to use a combination of hard and fast rules and gut instinct. Our hard and fast rules are listed below, but as for gut instinct—you just kind of have to know. For example: John Oates put out a rock record called Phunk Shui on an indie label, however, in no way should Phunk Shui be mistaken for indie rock. Likewise, Black Flag put out many seminal punk albums on SST, but we’re not talking about punk or grunge or classic post-kraut-rock, we’re talking about indie rock. Are Black Flag really indie rock? Not to our ears.

Here are the hard and fast rules:
• One album per artist.
• No EPs or singles, this list is about albums.
• No greatest hits collections or compilations of previously released tracks.
• Nominations must have been originally released on an independent label. Albums released on indies which were later acquired and/or re-released by majors are allowed (like Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation, originally released by a pre-1989 major label merger Enigma Records).

With the only one album per artist rule, there are definitely a few that make you scratch your head — why Death Cab’s We Have The Facts instead of Plans, why does Sufjan Stevens fall higher than Bright Eyes, and both of them higher than Arcade Fire’s Funeral, which is higher than Husker Du?

But when it’s coming from Amazon, we know two things that bring us solace. No. 1, it’s an online marketplace ranking indie records, and thus any discrepancy should be taken with that proverbial salt grain. No. 2, the only reason something like this exists on a site like Amazon is to boost sales. And any outlet that wants to boost sales of indie rock? Pretty much okay in our book.
