Hot Chip and the Roots Team Up To Form Rhythmic Voltron For Jimmy Fallon

Last night, Brit electro-funkers Hot Chip dropped by one of the better venues in New York — that is, the set of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon — to drop some dance-y knowledge from their new album, One Life Stand, on America’s after-hours couch potatoes. Oh, and look who give them some rhythmic assistance — the Roots! Take it from us: with these two getting together, there’s more thumping and grooving than a year’s worth of Ibiza anthems. Hey, NBC: hire Hot Chip on as a second house band along with Questlove and his mighty men. That would be Must-See TV.

Check out clips of Hot Chip and the Roots performing “Take It In” (which wasn’t featured in the original broadcast) above — and while you’re at it, watch the dynamic sorta-duo perform “One Life Stand” below.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Is Quickly Becoming One of the Better Venues in NYC

thespecialsSeriously. While seats are limited and that 5:30 taping time isn’t ideal if you happen to have a job, the booking masterminds over at 30 Rock have been collecting coups like puppies do kisses these days. There’s the Roots. There was the Jawbox comeback. Then there was the return of Sunny Day Real Estate. Then there was that time viewers could tell the Pixies which Doolittle jam they’d like to hear most. Via Twitter! Younger bands have made their TV debuts there as well recently: Japandroids finally played “Wet Hair” in a live setting, Julian Casablancas shared Christmas cheer and Beach House brought a slice of Teen Dream just last week. And for their next trick? According to Billboard, reunited ska pioneers The Specials will be performing on the show on April 13th, their first time to take a stage on U.S. soil in nearly 30 years. In addition to their slot at Coachella and an April 21st club show at NYC’s Terminal 5, it’s one of only three currently scheduled Specials gigs at the moment. Stay tuned for more info on that though— Billboard also reports that more April shows are in the works as is a full 2010 tour.

Roots & David Byrne Join Dirty Projectors On Stage in NYC

dirtyprojectors

It’s good to be Dave Longstreth these days. Just in case being profiled by New York Magazine as a symbolic representation of Brooklyn’s musical creativity and putting out one of the most interesting indie rock albums to come out in years wasn’t enough, he also proved on Sunday night that his posse is definitely cooler than your posse.

Dirty Projectors capped their tour with a four-show run in New York City, finishing with a Bowery Ballroom set opened by Juliana Barwick and Tune-Yards. During their set, they were joined onstage by three members of The Roots (noted DP fan ?uestlove among them) for two songs, including summer smash “Stillness In The Move.”
As if that hadn’t already made you forget the $15 you dropped on the show, during their encore they brought out an extra microphone for David Byrne and they all did their Dark Was The Night jam  “Knotty Pine” together. Man does this show make staying home to watch football seem like a boring choice… (Via: Brooklyn Vegan)

Somewhere Over the Rain-fro: ?uestlove To Play Wizard of Oz Anniversary Show

questlove

We’re not always one for assertions, but if this event doesn’t at least slightly intrigue you we’re willing to go out on a limb and say you hate music and had no childhood. Take it for what you will.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, and Netflix has put together this sort of odd, sort of awesome event to coincide with its DVD release. ?uestlove will produce the event, as well as perform alongside Jennifer Hudson, Bilal, Julianne Hough and many more. The artists will perform contemporary interpretations of classic songs from the film, according to the event website, which sounds somewhere between bizarre and incredible. The event is free. Full details here. (Via: URB)

Win Tickets To See FELA! On Broadway

We’re not sure Fela Kuti’s epic story should be told in any other format besides the musical, and we don’t even like musicals!  That said, it just so happens we’re giving away two tickets to see the show for zero dollars. All you need to do is leave us a haiku in the comments before [...]
