it has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms For Peace. hope you like the name.. it seemed bleedin’ obvious.

Steven Ellison, a.k.a. futuristic beatmaker Flying Lotus, has already made quite a name for himself with his brand of psychedelic instrumental hip-hop, best showcased on 2008’s stunning Los Angeles. But getting Radiohead front man Thom Yorke to guest on his new record? That’s big, man — like, Avatar big.

Alright, so FlyLo probably won’t be breaking box office records any time soon — but one can hope that Yorke’s appearance on Cosmogramma, FlyLo’s second full-length for Warp scheduled for release May 4, will get the man some more mainstream attention (as if a New Yorker profile doesn’t attract enough heat). The 17-track Cosmogramma will also feature appearances by singer Laura Darlington (who provided vocals on the meditative Los Angeles closer “Auntie’s Lock/Infinitum”) and sax virtuoso Ravi Coltrane — the latter of which is related to Flying Lotus through aunt and jazz legend Alice Coltrane. These musical luminaries join Bjork, Eric Clapton, UNKLE, DJ Spooky, and Rob Dougan (aka Rob D), who have all contributed previously released music for the score. The official release date for the soundtrack is still being negotiated, but it promises to be a big day for music enthusiasts. Big. Huge. Brontosaurean.

Sort of like that new op-ed Bono unleashed on the world just the other day in the New York Times. That byline never gets old.

In a blog post entitled “nuclear power no thanks,” Thom Yorke dropped a few s-bombs on the British government last night. And by s-bomb we mean sarcasm, not shit! Har.

Then, just as he might at the end of a Radiohead show or perhaps an awkward conversation with a stranger on the street, Mr. Yorke made his exit quietly and too soon. He did however leave the following image in his wake. We love him all the more for it.

Twi-hards, rejoice: the soundtrack for the latest film in the Twilight series, New Moon, will be released this Friday, as “overwhelming and unprecedented demand” prompted the release date to be pushed up by four days. The album will be hitting stores more than a month before the film is released on November 20, so the Twilight faithful can comfort themselves with the musical musings of Death Cab for Cutie, Thom Yorke, Muse, the Killers, OK Go, Grizzly Bear, Lykke Li, Bon Iver, St. Vincent, Sea Wolf, and the Editors, among others, until their cinematic dreams become reality.

Watch out, Los Angeles, two shows of epic importance are touching down in your city next week: on October 4 and 5 at the Orpheum Theatre, Thom Yorke will be performing with his new solo band, featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Yorke’s production collaborators Nigel Godrich and Joey Waronker, and multi-instrumentalist Mauro Refosco. According to Yorke, the group came together “for fun” to work on new songs as well as on tracks from his 2006 solo album, The Eraser. “We don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz .. well .. we haven’t got that much material yet,” he wrote on Radiohead’s website.

Local band Lucky Dragons will open the show, which promises to feature current Yorke solo work, including “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses” and “The Hollow Earth,” tracks recently released on 12-inch vinyl. Another new song, “Hearing Damage,” is slated to appear on the New Moon soundtrack.

Rotten Tomatoes featured an interview with New Moon director Chris Weitz last week in which the Twilight sequel’s director went deep on the film’s still germinating soundtrack. Why was this of note? Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke was said to be interested in contributing an original song. But according to Pitchfork, Weitz is now confirming that Yorke has in fact written a song to be included on the soundtrack and the American Pie director will get a chance to hear it for the first time today. “Unless it’s sounds of him belching,” Weitz said, “I think I’ll put it in.”

But wait! There’s more! Yorke has esteemed company: Wisconsin bard and nascent philanthropist Bon Iver has also been confirmed as a contributor to the soundtrack. This is all pretty weird.

In an interview/full-blast geekdown with Rotten Tomatoes, director Chris Weitz shed some light on soundtrack happenings behind his upcoming Twilight sequel, “New Moon.”

Fortunately, I’m not at the stage where I have to turn anybody down yet, because everything is still kind of up in the air,” Weitz shared, “but I am surprised at some of the bands that have said they’re interested. It’s kind of great. The criterion will still always be what’s right for the movie at that given moment, but Thom Yorke is interested; we might, if we’re very lucky, get Kings of Leon to do something… it’s exciting to be able to have access to this kind of talent.

Shocking? Befuddling? Maybe the former, but a spooky Thom Yorke recording actually makes perfect sense here the more we think about it. Also, depending on how you pronounce the word tomato, writer and resident Twilight expert Jenn Yamato’s rhymes pretty well. You heard it here first.

There is always a faint feeling of apprehension at the thought of Radiohead covers — lets face it, not many people can deliver a performance quite like Thom Yorke. But Macy Gray’s cover of “Creep” at the Los Angeles premiere of the music documentary The Heart is a Drum Machine, wasn’t all that bad.

The r&b songstress was backed by Matt Sorum, former member of Guns N’ Roses, on drums, and Billy Morrison of The Cult on guitar at the event, which took place at the Nike Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood. Along with Gray’s performance, Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction also played, covering The Rolling Stones‘ “Sympathy for the Devil”, and Juliette Lewis also performed. The event was part of the LA Weekend series of culture events.

The performances were done in celebration of The Heart is a Drum Machine’s release, which looks at the reality of music as a unique human expression. The film has a hoard of musical guests who discuss the idea behind the distinct musical/human relationship, including Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips, Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

We patiently waited to hear the over-due new album from DOOM, Born Like This, and we waited even longer to hear what sort of genius Thom Yorke could add to DOOM’s already brilliantly strange cadence. Well, we got the track, we listened to it, and we have to say the Yorke remixed version of “Gazzillion Ear” sounds more like a The Eraser b-side than anything else.

We’re usually fans of the Radiohead/hip-hop mix, as the experimentally charged rhythms and compellingly melodic sounds of Thom Yorke’s wailing usually compliment hip hop beats, but this time around we can’t say that is completely true. The beginning of the “Gazillion Ear” remixed track starts out strong, giving you the expectation of something mind blowing, but it looses steam as it progresses. Regardless, Yorke managed to make a decent remix, and though we would have liked to see some more of DOOM’s original beats thrown into the mix, Yorke has managed to create a remix that is worth at least one or two good listens.

Some paparazzi take pictures of super models and actresses lounging barely clothed on exotic beaches. Then there’s the guy who takes semi-nudes of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Of course, then there’s people like us, who post those pictures. We can’t really judge.

Yorke meditated in the sand, swam and relaxed on Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — where they were playing festival dates — last Thursday. Maybe those deep, cleansing thoughts are about getting rid of negative energy in his life. Like Miley Cyrus.

Thom Yorke hearts DOOM. So much so, in fact, that he’s remixed a track from the underground rap icon’s upcoming album. We just wonder if he’s seen DOOM without his mask on.

Yorke put his magical touch on “Gazzillion Ear,” a track from DOOM’s long-awaited album Born Like This. When it hits the streets March 24, fans can download the remix as an iTunes-only bonus track. Incidentally, Yorke also included “Meat Grinder”, a song from the DOOM/Madlib collaboration Madvillain, on his Grammy poster.
