Telefon Tel Aviv – “What It Is Without The Hand”

Charlie Cooper

It seems as though this winter has brought it with repeated sad news as a host of respected musicians have passed away. While we in no way wish to undermine the loss of people like Lux Interior or Dewey Martin, the passing of Telefon Tel Aviv’s Charlie Cooper was way too shocking. He was only 31 and had just released a new record.

We were hoping to find an “official” band video to run as our Flashback Friday installment, but in true Telefon fasion, they lied just far enough below the radar of the mainstream that anything official is not easily accessible. But we stumbled across this beautiful video created by YouTube user Invisiblescottie for the song “What It Is Without The Hand”. The imagery in the video would seem rather mundane in any other context, but with the slowly plodding soundscape of Telefon Tel Aviv providing the soundtrack, it becomes a hauntingly appropriate visual for the song. Kind of like another video we really like.

Ironically, “What It Is Without The Hand” was originally released on the record Map of What Is Effortless on Janurary 27, 2004 — exactly 5 years ago to the day his death was announced.
